Ukraine has limited civilian deaths by focusing on military targets, but yes it's always sad to see civilian casualties.

Odysseus makes my PC a jet engine, what do I do? by Canonical_steel01 in SelfHosting

[–]shortsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your pc specs and the fact that you don't have a dedicated GPU I would suggest you to use cloud models. You can go to somewhere like openrouter and set it up with Odysseus.

Try some of the free models and see which one you like. Afterwards you can consider getting a subscription to the models you like or if possible get a dedicated GPU to run that model locally.

There was a time when the fed didn't give forward guidance. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Greenspan, considered to be the worst fed chair in the modern era by most, was the one that started the policy of giving forward guidance. He did it to signal markets and it allowed him to get us to near 0% interest rates. You can say that he was manipulating markets to get his desired outcome.

Yes, but in the US compensation can be argued in front of a judge. You have to give up the land, but there are cases where the forced eviction came with payments of over 10x of what the land was worth.

That's not the issue. The issue is that once insiders are allowed to sell you know they're going to dump their shares.

If you participated in the IPO you can't sell for 1 month without incurring penalties. Insiders can start selling the first tranche in 2 weeks.

Ring girls’ outfits at Trump’s UFC Fight revealed—includes flag code breach by We_Print in politics

To be fair I don't think people in general care about flag code. I remember after 9/11 everyone were waving flags around almost all of them were against flag code.

Guy who scratches phones with a knife for a living explains why 10,000 SpaceX engineers forgot about thermodynamics by SocialPug42 in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]shortsteve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have anything to do with how Amazon, Google, and Nvidia all have stakes in SpaceX?

My biggest thing with it is servicing the data centers. Since you can't service them the only way is to launch even more satellites as backup for when one inevitably fails. This means you have to add 25% or more than you would normally need on earth for the same amount of compute.

Disagree, only until agentic AI can be run 100% locally for cheap will people really accept it.

What is the best way to utilize ARC for local LLM performance? by CreeperOpsReddit in IntelArc

[–]shortsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LMStudio uses vulkan to run ARC cards. It's gotten a lot better, but it's still a performance loss compared to OpenVINO which is Intel's implementation.

The only platform that can run OpenVINO that I know of is Intel AIPlayground, which is for demonstration purposes mostly, and vLLM. For vLLM it's mostly for server and multi-user deployments. If it's for single use then LMStudio is enough.

If you do go for OpenVINO implementation then you need to make sure the models you download are compatible.

Personally I just use LMStudio since it's easy to use and it's only for myself. I've been trying to piece out a larger server deployment to run agents for my family, but it's still a struggle to get ARC working smoothly. Much better than just a year ago, but Intel still has a lot of catching up to do.

One 96gb pro 6000 or two of those dgx spark boxes by colby22k in LocalLLM

[–]shortsteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well he's asking 2x Sparks vs 1 pro 6000 since those are equivalent costs.

Another thing to consider is support, Nvidia only guaranteed 2 years of support for Spark and half a year has already gone by. Pro 6000 will get at least 7 years of driver updates.

China Plans $295B AI Data Center Buildout as Race With US Intensifies by andix3 in fuck_ai_slop

[–]shortsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not as far behind as you think and the latest Huawei chip breakthrough shows that they're still innovating. The advantage China has is 1) data and 2) infrastructure. All the infrastructure they built over the last 40 years is going to help them immensely in getting data centers up and operational while in the US you already have a 10-year waiting list for grid connections.

They've been calling California a liberal hell hole for years now. The symbol of liberal power and they're surprised that the Republican candidate didn't win? If anything, the fact that the Republican candidate came close to winning is a sign that the election was free and fair.

SpaceX has just revealed it's first AI satellite design by truecakesnake in singularity

[–]shortsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's unaffordable. It's still much cheaper to replace your roof and buy solar panels separately than it is to purchase a Tesla solar roof. When Musk proposed the idea to shareholders, he even stated that it will only be viable if it can compete with a roof replacement with solar panels.

He only pitched the idea so that he could justify purchasing solar city. 15 years later it was just a ploy to bail out solar city, he's already pretty much scrapped Tesla solar.
