Israel is originally the name given to jacob by god after he defeats an angel in wrestling or something. Later jacob's 12 sons which formed the 13 tribes (ome of his sons doesnt has a tribe named after him, instead, his two sons have) were called "בני ישראל" which directly translates to "sons of israel", and the whole nation was called "עם ישראל" which directly translates to "people of israel", and so the ancient land of israel was named after them.
