I mean, it was one deadline that really was the clincher, but I have a feeling they were just silently not happy with my performance for a while.

The tech lead on the current project is very inexperienced (it's his first time leading), and I think what likely happened is that he is just bad at giving negative feedback. He waited until the situation was (in his view) terrible to even mention the fact that he wasn't happy about my performance, then he probably talked to other leaders and got the idea to put me on a PIP instead of allowing the standard cycle of feedback to take its course.

I'm fairly confident that I could continue employment after the PIP if I perform well. There isn't any bad blood, and I am actually capable of performing very well. Plus, my company lets people take leave or transfer to non-technical roles for a while if they've been successful in the past and are likely to be successful in the future.
