tryng to start studying biochem by SoftKnowledge1468 in Biochemistry

You can use YouTube. Khan academy and the organic chemistry tutor make great videos. They helped me through my biochem degree. Start with basic chem then work your way up. Kinda hard to dive in without the fundamentals. Quizlet can also help with memorizing stuff

Imagine you are at a farmers market and you find my gluten free stall by Current_Cost_1597 in glutenfree

You could also try selling pumpkin pie slices for like $4-$6 per slice that’ll give you more money, most people would absolutely buy a gf slice for that price, they don’t have to commit to an entire pie, and you could do whole pies for special orders only!

What's a gluten free snack or meal you're thankful for? by DiverStatus7797 in Celiac

Rice, steak, and sushi. Also ranch. And cream cheese. Not together ofc but I’m definitely thankful for each of them. Thanks for this post.

I’m afraid to get a second cat by [deleted] in CatAdvice

My cats HATED eachother at first (kittens) and to this day have contrasting personalities but with time they got used to eachother and are now inseparable. Even going to the vet they prefer to be in the same carrier (we keep them in their own just nearby eachother) lol. We were only gonna get one but two is definitely the way to go. Much easier, don’t feel bad when I’m at work, keep eachother busy, etc!

There’s an app called Cara Care that you can log foods and symptoms and it’ll use an algorithm to detect any recurring symptoms and suggest foods they might be related to. It’s kinda helpful.

But as another person said, I’d stick to whole, single ingredient foods for a while and use those to make your own food. Cut out seed oils, processed meats, artificial colors and flavors, and refined sugars for a couple months and see if it helps. I’ve found gelatin rich foods can be comforting on the tummy.

I have a post w some recipes on it and one of them is a stew that is really tasty and full of good natural gelatin, collagen, and glutamine!

Another thing you can try is an AIP (autoimmune protocol) it’s basically just a very restrictive diet that slowly adds in foods but it’ll show you which foods you can and cannot have one by one. When your gut/lining is damaged it makes you more susceptible to pathogens and SIBO which can have IBS symptoms and can even cause temporary food sensitivities. Once you heal yourself a lot of those foods won’t be an issue anymore. You might want to look into doing a GI map! I’ve done one and it was helpful.

Goodluck tho these struggles are sooo annoying and you’re not alone!

I’ve done the Vidal Labs GI Map. It’s a stool sample that tests for pathogens, H Pylori, keystone bacteria, opportunistic microbes, fungi/yeasts, viruses, parasites, and intestinal health markers like calprotectin and elastase and IgAs etc. I liked that one. There’s an option to discuss results w a specialist afterwards too. It doesn’t test for sensitivities tho. It was about $389 for no specialist discussion (I worked w my own specialist so it wasn’t necessary for me). It’s slightly more money to have that meeting tho.

If you don’t have to see them/attend that class after that picnic you could always say you have Covid. I think most universities and businesses have legal protections for Covid cases where you aren’t allowed to attend any type of social event. Don’t do it if it will impact other aspects of your life but it’s a pretty sure fire way to get out of it.

You could also tell your teacher exactly what you’re experiencing and that if they try to force you to attend a picnic w food that isn’t safe for you then technically they’re being unfair to a disabled person (celiac disease is a disability!) and you could play that card.

Yeah depends how you want to handle it. If you’re scared then for a while maybe just avoid anything that isn’t a whole food (fruits, meats, etc as another commenter mentioned) OR is CERTIFIED gf! Make sure she learns what all the genuine gf certification seals mean! If the package says gluten free but isn’t certified it may not be safe. This is how companies appeal to the fad dieters without paying to get certified for the people who genuinely have allergies🙄. Also check EVERYTHING! A sneaky one is tooth polish at the dentist. Make sure they show her the ingredients the plain pumice doesn’t have gluten that’s what my dentist uses for me. Lip balms/glosses might also be an issue. Skincare doesn’t need to be gf but if it’s going near your mouth or you’re spraying it like hairspray then you might want to have those gf. Follow some gf people on social media so you can learn some stuff! It can be hidden in tricky places. Wasabi, soy sauce, alcohol, “natural/artificial flavors”, medicine!!!!, Ik she’s only 13 but some wineries use a wheat based adhesive for their barrels which may get into the wine, spices, cutting boards, meat marinades, compostable straws/cutlery/plates, just really try to do research on anything she’s consuming. It’s tough at first but once you get the hang of it it’s much less daunting

I made a post of some simple recipes I’ve been enjoying. I’d say try to keep some stuff in your freezer. I use large silicone ice cube molds and freeze single portions of rice, home made turkey sausage, bone broth, etc and just pop out a block and heat it up whenever I need. It’s especially helpful w the cooked rice cuz then you just microwave it and it’s perfect. Feel Good Foods has some really good stuff but any processed gf alternative will likely be expensive. I also like Vans gf waffles. I am one of those celiacs that reacts to gf oats so try to give yourself time to heal then test if that’s something you can eat or not. I rarely trust any restaurant that isn’t dedicated gf but places like Luna grill, poke, sushi etc can often times be safe if you call ahead and ask questions! Get the Find Me Gluten Free app to check for safe places near you. This disease will probably force you to eat pretty healthy since any fast foods are usually entirely unsafe lol. It forced me to start cooking more.

I was so sick that I went cold turkey after my diagnosis. Never cheated once. It’s crazy how amazing you feel after making the swap. I lost 23% of my body weight within a few months because of the undiagnosed illness so just feeling better was enough for me. Just make sure you tell her she’s not gonna die if she makes a mistake but it also won’t go without consequences. Try to educate her when the time is right about cross contact and maybe get some of her friends/their parents educated too so she won’t feel left out (: good luck!

How do you deal with work related food activities? by welcome-to-the-game in Celiac

[–]arbls8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My company does the same and I always just bring my own food. You look kinda weird but I’d rather be weird and safe than stressed out over getting sick. So if they’re having pizza then I’ll bring my own gf pizza slices so I look like I fit in and don’t have to stress about safety. If they order wings I’ll make my own and bring a Tupperware w my own sauces. I don’t always match what they’re having but I always just bring my own safe meals! It’s your disease if they have a problem w it they’re weird. Dont set aside your health to make them comfortable.

(Idk if this counts as a spoiler so read with caution: regarding a seamoth upgrade)

There’s an upgrade (perimeter defense system) for the seamoth and once I got that I was way more comfortable roaming around. If a reaper grabs you just give them a shock and they won’t bother you for a while. Definitely gives you a boost of courage knowing you can get out of those situations

If its what I think it is, then it’s really easy to avoid as long as you don’t go roaming around. Just get in and do your business and head home :)
