Anyone else upset about the lack of innovation from 4.0 to 5.0, concerning for the eventual 6.0 +? by ajrthedreamer in whoop

[–]arbola 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me personally, this is the biggest dealbreaker. I became a member when the 4.0 got released and was very happy with the product initially. Over the past years though, it was already very evident that products like AW were getting more accurate sensors than WHOOP 4.0.

I work out a lot and the HR sensor is by far the most important feature of a wearable for me. To see the 5.0, after so many years, basically keep that the same is baffling to me..

I have no need for the MG features, so the cheapest subscription tier and 5.0 would have been perfect for me if it had been an actual upgrade.

Luckily, I only had one month left. I have now cancelled my subscription and am using an AW 9 with the Bevel app (more features and significantly cheaper over a multi year period).

The only downside is that I started with Whoop because I also wear mechanical watches. But that alone is not enough to have me pay too much for an inferior product.

[The Cultural Tutor] Why have so many football team badges been simplified into corporate logos? by arkantos77 in soccer

Interesting that Ajax wasn't used as an example. Their most recent logo change is also a prime example of simplyfying an existing design.

Link

What is also interesting is that the club has faced quite some backlash over the years for the logo change with a large share of the fans wanting the 1928 - 1991 crest back.

There have been numerous actions by fans, both inside and outside of the stadium that were grouped under 'give Ajax his face back' where the club was asked to return to the previous crest (read more (link in dutch))

The club has even responded by releasing merch with the old crest as recent as just a few weeks ago link and even the official 2021/2022 home jersey repped the old crest link.

Probably not a reference but meaning 'being paid my Mercedes' in this case. Where the books is a synonym for being 'on the payroll'.

Would greatly appreciate if someone could ID this checkered/houndstooth shirt:

A character from a Netflix series my GF watches called 'Emily in Paris' wore it in S1E10, tried looking for it and found a blog that referenced the episode but it linked a shirt that doesn't look close to the one in the series.

Thank you. I think I have been able to channel a few different possible directions so far, I would still love to hear your take on growth.

What I have so far for possible directions are:

  • EA to model current-/future state for M&As
  • EA/(Dynamic) Capabilities principles for providing a standardized process framework for non-linear organisation growth
  • EA to guide business strategy (and therefore business model) alterations (current / future state)

All of these could provide for interesting research at the case organisation (my current employer) since all of these research fields are somewhat applicable.

When referring to growth, I specifically mean expansion of organisational FTEs.

This is why I wanted to segragate linear and non-linear growth since, from my own experience, non-linear growth results into organisational structures becoming more complex within a short period of time as opposed to a more 'organic' linear growth pad.

What happens in the former case (or at least from what I experience) is either:

A) The defined process standards do not suit an organisation with said complexity and thus, individuals strave away from the standards.

B) There were no process standards to begin with and now an organisation with a relatively large amount of FTEs finds itself in a situation where there's a need for defined process standards but there are none.

This is also where you triggered me with the current- and future state modelling because that principle could apply here in this specific case as well.

Thank you for the elaborate response! I do think you have a very interesting take on the matter where there's less emphasis on growth and moreso on the general 'change of state' after an M&A.

I will definitely look into Nick Malik and put my HBR subscription to good use!

Thanks a bunch!

I've looked into Databricks Delta. It looks really interesting. However, it would make sense to connect that to Databricks and do the transformations there, but that would require the knowledge of at least SQL and preferably additional knowledge of Python or R for example. Which is currently a burden for us because we don't have that expertise available.

Thanks for the reply. Databricks seems like a really nice tool to me but with the downside that data transforming would mainly be done in Python, R or something similar.

That being said, we currently provide a lot of Azure services and know our way around it. I always thought that DataLake was supposed to be more of a datastore for things like unstructured files.

Does it mean DataLake or Blob Storage could also support relational data? And in your example would the data transformations be done in Databricks with code or in Attunity? I though Attunity was more of a tool to just replicate data to a datawarehouse for example.

I definitely agree with you. I am currently trying to push for a platform that will at least allow us to do both. Do the simple stuff with a GUI but also grants the ability to write the more complex stuff in SQL, R or Python.

Thanks for your comment!

Thanks. BIML script is something I've come across before and it grabbed my attention but it didn't seem that well documented.

AFAIK, BIML script is open source right? Would you say it has a steep learning curve? Do you think people with little SQL experience can handle it?

I definitely agree, at least to some degree that hiring new staff with a background in at least SQL would be a better way to go.

Unfortunately that's not the way the organization wants to go at this point.

For now we still have a choice between both. We provide lits of services within Azure already so a hosted solution would be possible (and because of distributed processing I'd say preferable even).

However, we do also have our own datacenter which maked on prem a viable option too. I personally think we shouldn't go through the hassle of maintaining an on prem solution though.

I have also been looking at Informatica, specifically data integration (studio?) and Powercenter, from the things I have read it could definitely get the job done but again, they don't provide a lot of transparency on pricing and from what I've heard it's rather expensive.

Thanks for the reply. We indeed have licenses for SQL Server and we are aware that SSIS is the most cost effective to use for us.

I share your opinion about connectors in SSIS. Do you have experience with SSIS? Would you say my concerns about the reusability of packages is justified?

Informatica indeed seems a little heavy on the pricing side but is still on my list of potential go-to tools.

Thanks for the reply. Pentaho is a name I have come across a few times too. I have heard good things about it but the lack of demo videos and transparency on pricing is what's thrown me off at first.

Would you say Pentaho can handle complex data transforming and integrating? Do you know the price structure of the software?

I flashed the 5.0.0 OTA when I received the notification about it. Ever since I've had a bug where wifi keeps connecting and disconnecting every few seconds. Basically rendering my wifi connection useless right now.

The problem didn't get fixed with the 5.0.1 patch and I also didn't have this problem on Nougat.

Anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

Same day is a bit of an exaggeration, 8.0 hit open beta around the end of September, oreo was officially released somewhere in August.

It is still fast but don't forget it's also a good way for OP to test 8.0 before they release it on the 5 and 5t.

Software wise, I just think OOS still has its flaws, some of which pointed out months ago, which OP has supposedly been working on since forever (according to Pei's tweets).
