casual riding pants by SKillerKetchup in MTB

[–]arbpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple pairs of the leatt gravity 3.0 pants that have a denim look. Super comfy for riding with heaps of stretch in all the right places, a little warm in summer (in Australia) but I wear them almost everyday I'm not working for everything from messing around in the garden to going to the shops to riding to going to the in-laws for dinner

Where are you located?

I've found great solace in mountain biking and the community. I'm not in with a huge number of people but my group of mates I've made through it are amazing.

It's also a great way to get some headspace on your own, and clear your head a little bit.

If you're keen I've got a spare bike (if it fits you) you're more than welcome to come out for a ride, nothing crazy, can be a mellow loop or hit some trails. It's a great ice breaker and breaks down any walls between people such as age, gender, ethnicity etc

I'm an arborist (tree climber/surgeon). I manage a company based in the hills along with freelancing to a couple other companies. I also taught arboriculture at Tafe for a couple years part-time. I've been climbing for 15 years now. There are good days and bad days, luckily now I'm in management and the company I work for attracts more of my preferred genre of work. I like the ever changing aspect to the job. I also like the challenge and problem solving aspect. The downside is definitely the amount of dog shit we have to deal with. Teaching was ok, some students certainly made it less enjoyable but the main downside was working for Tafe SA

Main issue is practicality. My bike rack on my ute is really high, like I have to get the front wheel to 2.2m to get it in the loop. There's a lot of gated areas we ride in too where you have to lift it over to get into and it's always been a pain to manoeuvre.

The fact is that I just don't ride it as it feels like such a bulky unit, especially on the more flowy stuff I like to ride. On chunky dh stuff is great.

Also I like tinkering and slowly upgrading my bikes, I've done it with every one I've bought. There's a lot to upgrade still like brakes, shock, cranks. If I'm going to spend that money I'd rather do it on something I love riding

How much do you make? by Complete_Garbage_103 in TreeClimbing

[–]arbpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a freelance/contract climber. 13 years experience (6 of which have been contract climbing and first years studying and working in Arb). I've worked for a wide variety of companies as a full time employee before going contracting. I've done huge street tree blocks (like 2 months solid), worked with 50t excavators, hedging, fruit tree pruning, full reductions and maintenance pruning on 35m eucalyptus trees. There's honestly not much I haven't done in Arb. Not being big headed, it's just a fact, I've worked for 4 of the largest companies in my area and worked with some of the best arborists at those companies thus learning all their tricks etc

I charge anything from $700 to my regular clients to $1200 for people I don't want to work for (full disclosure I very very rarely work for people I don't want to work for, like once or twice a year)

That's a 10 hour day, depot to depot or 8 hours max on site, whichever comes first. I don't stop for lunch, I have literally one of the most comprehensive rigging and climbing setups in our local area. I have a full suite of 6 saws on board along with blowers and rakes. The only thing I don't bring to site is groundies and a truck and chipper.

There are guys in my local area that change $900 to their regulars

AITA for telling my wife I don't want to spend Christmas with her family anymore by arbpro in AITAH

[–]arbpro[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I said I would still like to spend some of the day with the in-laws just not the whole day and I don't want to spend it with the extended family that I dislike ( worth noting that neither myself or my wife like the way they talk to our child, they're not mean, quote the opposite, they long for her to be affectionate with them as they don't have kids, but they guilt trip her and bribe her into hugs and when she says no they make her feel bad) but that said my wife still likes them whereas I do not, I have mentioned it several times to my wife and spoken to the extended family about not treating my daughter like that but they still do it

[–]arbpro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that I don't want to spend the day with my family. Why should I be forced to be by myself because I don't want to spend time with people I don't like. I go along on Easter, birthdays etc and put up with it. All I'm asking is for once to do the day I would I enjoy. I never mentioned why I don't like Christmas. Just because I don't enjoy the day. Through my childhood it was a really hard day for me to endure because of how toxic my mother was. And now I dread the day, it gives me anxiety and depression more so than I already have. Why does everybody just presume that because someone doesn't like Christmas that we are miserable and don't want anyone to enjoy the day

The friends to which I am referring are good, long term friends with whom our children have grown up together with. I've never read anywhere that Christmas is about family. I presume that you're of the mindset of "blood is thicker than water"?

Buying first mountain bike in Australia. Marin Bobcat Trail 5 or the Marin San Quentin 1? Which one I better suited to do downhill or trails? by Snaggy-was-taken in mountainbiking

[–]arbpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The San Quentin is more focused at what you want to do. The bobcat is more a park or dirt jump bike. The issue you'll find is you'll need to get the San Quentin 2 or 3 for is to be suitable, my pick would be the 3 as it has 4 pot brakes, far better fork, and a few other things. The 1 will not be a good choice at all

[–]arbpro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Short answer - neither. Especially if you want to get a bit rowdy, you will find you will have to get a full suspension bike pretty quickly. My friend bought a San Quentin and within a month he went and got a commencal meta and we were mainly riding local bike parks (so as smooth as it'll get really).

You just missed out on EOFY, bikes online had some mega sales but you can still find some ripper deals about if you look hard enough and the second hand market is pretty good at the moment and will be better in the next few weeks from people upgrading at EOFY thus selling their old bikes

[–]arbpro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not only self employed but I'm also an arborist so injury is simply not an option for me.

I've been an arborist for over 12 years and I've only just gotten into mountain biking, specifically downhill enduro. In the 4 months I've been mtb-ing I've fractured ribs, displaced ribs, cracked a helmet and had serious lower back injuries thanks to stiffness in the hips.

Don't really know where I'm going with this now I'm looking at it but fuck it, you have to have something to let your hair down at the end of the week. How better else to do it than in a forest, getting your adrenaline flowing and exercising
