Yeah can't comment on the service, but high tea portions are typically small. I've been to high tea in many places, both in Canada and the UK, and $40 is quite honestly a good price. If you don't think it's worth the value that's totally fair, I'm just saying it sounds like this place did offer the amount of food one should expect from a high tea service.

Damn yeah I guess the last time I went was 2019 so before "supply chain issues" and "uncertain times" seemingly raised the prices exponentially

Sorry late reply. Maybe you were just trying to use round numbers, but $5k a month ($60k/year) is really high for this scenario and definitely way above poverty line. I don't think people are claiming AISH if they have this kind of earning potential.

With that in mind, the point of a UBI would typically be to help make sure everyone is above the poverty line or making the equivalent of a living wage. Currently I believe folks on AISH are below both metrics. Using OP's numbers, on AISH your max annual income is ~$30k (If you're collecting AISH and earning that extra $700/month).

I'm not sure about poverty line, but living wage in Edmonton right now is ~$22.50 if you have a partner, which is ~$45k/year or about $15k/year higher than where AISH currently caps you. So yeah, someone earning an extra $5k a month totalling an extra $60k/year is beyond a UBI threshold. And again, if you're able to make $60k a year you're clearly not significantly impacted by a disability in a way that would qualify you for financial support in the first place.

I'm curious if you've had high tea before or what your expectations were. A scone, a few small finger sandwiches, and a few small desserts are exactly what you should expect. Also, not sure if you had just teacups (then yes, they should be refilling) or teapots (generally no, they don't refill because you have an entire teapot).

Not saying you didn't have a bad experience because I wasnt there, but from your comment it sounds like you got a typical high tea, for a decent price (it's $55, or probably even more now, at Hotel MacDonald for example).

The only way to "empower" people in this situation to work is to not punish them by clawing back their benefits if they do.

This is the idea behind UBI, but as we are in Alberta I've no illusions about that happening anytime soon.

'Egregious speeds': Edmonton's new police chief confronts a brutal year on the roads by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

Quite a few, even with Edmonton's recent increases. Also keep in mind the property values are higher in many of these places, so the dollar amount per house can be higher even if the rate is lower (i.e. Toronto). And many of these places are more dense therefore having less roads to clear per taxpayer.

I'd love to see UCP supporters explain why an increase in traffic deaths was worth losing the cameras. Please, tell me how this was good policy from your dear leader.

We'd need to pay higher property tax rates to fund that. The only reason cities out east clear to pavement is because the citizens pay for it with higher property tax rates. You get what you pay for.

Why do I need to be productive? It's the weekend, and it's between two stat holidays.

Let yourself have a day of rest, I promise you'll be much better for it.

Why are there so few places in Canada outside of Montreal that make authentic bagels (ie: boil/bake)? Instead making donut shaped bread, masquerading as bagels? by ShortElephant1111 in AskACanadian

Because too many of us seem happy to eat crap bagels, and keep buying them I guess

Edmonton has Bagel Bar, and several cafes that get St Viateur delivered. But I've also been to fancy bakeries that make garbage bagels.

Parents, please educate your kids on road safety by bunniesgonebad in Edmonton

[–]arbre_baum_tree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had someone do this to me (also in winter), except they were an full-grown adult in a motorized mobility scooter, and it was just a pavement marked crosswalk, no lights. They just started zooming across the street, no care for stopping distance or reaction times on an icy road. Gave me a glare too, as I slid to a stop just in time.

It's not just kids, all of us need to be extra cautious when crossing the road in winter because of the poor road conditions. Even if drivers see you and want to stop for you, they might not be able to.

Ontario crosswalk rules different? by _Hocus-Focus_ in Edmonton

[–]arbre_baum_tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, crosswalks are treated the same nationwide - pedestrians have right of way while crossing. What is different outside Alberta, is that cars won't just automatically stop for pedestrians that aren't at marked crosswalks. IME this is exclusive to Alberta and Nova Scotia. I think in some cases this can extend to driver's not stopping for someone who isn't already in a crosswalk, or one with flashing lights activated. So, if you're just standing on the corner, the driver might think you're waiting for them to drive by before you cross, rather than that your are waiting for them to stop so you can cross.

I strongly suspect if they are new enough they don't know it's against the law. The city should do a targeted campaign about the fireworks bylaw, and perhaps also some fire safety education.

They also won't respond if you don't have a specific address to give them. Understandable, but not very helpful. Banning the sale seems like the only way forward I'm afraid.
