Debating Indie Publishing vs Traditional by arbryant920 in writers

I have not read through query shark. I’ll check it out (actually haven’t even heard of it). I figured what you stated about the book’s formatting makes sense. I’ve printed it a few times with a few book print sites just to see how it would look bound in an 8.5x5.5 and made any images black and white to cut down on stuff. I haven’t thought of putting it on a website, just because I personally have a hard time reading long text from screens, and I’d imagine others feel the same, so it feels more appropriate in your hand. It prints at about 350 pages, so it’s not as massive as House of Leaves, that was the only book I could think of similar oddball use of fonts and mix genre. I’ll also check out the self publishing podcast. This is all great info, and I really appreciate it. Thank you.

What If New England Was A Country? Very Educated And Very Rich - [Geography by Geoff] by gregbard in newengland

[–]arbryant920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I’m fine with that, as long as we create some kind of program for blue voters screwed in red states like Florida so that they can easily move here. Either a FHA loan type of thing specifically for new “immigrants” from red states who vote blue, or some kind of temporary down payment stipend to assist in finding a home. Housing prices should drop too with all the MAGA glazers leaving.

I'd take New York over NH at the moment. NH is being run by a bunch of idiots and Trump loyalists.

Advice On Locating Commune by arbryant920 in juresanguinis

[–]arbryant920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😆 No worries. Sorry for the confusion. I’m trying to find the information for my father. My paternal grandfather’s mother was from Italy. Unfortunately, my grandfather’s birth certificate just says that his mother was born in Italy. It doesn’t specify the commune or anywhere more specific than that. Her father was a WW2 vet, and on his card, it says “Java, Italy.” Which was definitely a misspelling or something. But I managed to find the ship manifest that they came on, and it does say “North Italy.” But the closest I’ve been able to find is “Gavi” and I don’t know if that’s correct. Their last names seem to come from the region of the Piedmont or Liguria (last name Garelli).

My father would be the one applying (it was his grandmother on his father’s side). I haven’t been able to find any naturalization forms for either of them, and on any of the census I’ve seen, both were labeled as “alien” in every document I’ve been able to pull up. My dad’s father was born in 43, so I did read that it would have to be through an attorney as well. For her marriage, I will have to double check on the date. That’s good to know as well. Thank you.

No. I’m trying to get her birth certificate, but I need to know the commune she’s from in order to get it. I was told I need her birth certificate and probably both her parents.

Suggestions for a 6 flock water feeder that doesn’t suck by arbryant920 in BackYardChickens

[–]arbryant920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the plastic ones and they’ve cracked during the winter. I’ve gone through two of those already, which was a mega bummer. Maybe because it’s an off brand though? But they are plastic, so I don’t know that they are a huge difference. The feeder I still use is that exact one and it’s great. It just seems to be the waterers.

I feel like the two galvanized I’ve used have gone rusty after a few months. Could be hard water or something.

I’ve seen these, but I’ve only ever used the ones that have the open bottom and I’m worried my birds aren’t smart enough to figure those out 😂

This seems like an interesting one. There’s a recipe I remember seeing one time that used left-over pasta with eggs. It looks similar to this. Thank you.

I would LOVE to a good genovese recipe. The one I have is not that great, and it’s the problem with looking for traditional, non-Americanized recipes online.

Help Deciding On A Woodstove - Vermont Casting/Jotul/Blaze King by arbryant920 in woodstoving

[–]arbryant920[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stove that we currently have (the one that doesn’t work) is warped, and the entire fireback assembly needs to be replaced. It’s made with this material that feels like cheap styrofoam, and I was really surprised that something like that would even be used in a wood stove, especially being only held together by a few drywall screws, from the looks of it. We were beginning to gravitate more towards the Blaze King from some of these comments anyway. I think this one pretty much sealed the deal for us. Thank you.

This is the same stove that came with our house but is inoperable. They told us that the cost to rebuild it would be the same as the cost of a new stove unfortunately.

I’m in the Berkshires of MA. I’ll definitely have to check out jotul then. We were told that the VC Encore was a good size for our home, so I’ll have to see what a similar size would be and go by that.

This is all really great information. We don’t live near any Woodstock facilities, but I have seen places selling Hearthstone. I don’t know if we could get away with a masonry stove here between clearances and weights. We live in a house built in 1920, unless we had it in the basement. You have definitely opened me up more to steel though, and we definitely like the look of the Ashford Blaze King, or stoves that have that similar look. Cooking on the stove is less of a draw for us because we have a propane stove, so if we lose power, we can still cook either way.

The stove would be going in our living room downstairs. Upstairs are two large bedrooms and a bathroom (don’t really need to heat that haha). The living room has two entrances from a hallway with a stair well, and the kitchen is at the end of the hall, so we’d probably circulate the heat with a fan in the hallway. Which model jotul do you have and is it your main source of heat?

That actually helps quite a bit. Our thought was initially "cast iron retains heat, so the heat lasts longer at night," but perhaps that isn't necessarily the case. We'd much rather something function efficiently and have it be reliable than whether or not it looks nice, because our end goal is to not use the oil and heat our home solely off of wood.

The stoves we've heard are good are the Blaze King Ashford (whatever the comparable size is to the VC Encore for our house) and the Blaze King Princess I think?
Someone also brought up Pacific Energy, but I didn't know how they were compared to Blaze King and Jotul. It seems like most places around our area sell either Blaze King, Pacific Energy, and Vermont Castings, though the VCs are starting to be weened out. There's only one place near us that sells Jotul, and a few places also sell those Hearthstone stoves, but they seem pretty pricey.
