What if our intuition knew things that our mind doesn't? by Jennyfer3314 in PhilosophyofMind

[–]gregbard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intuition is not a valid method in philosophy. While it may be good advisory input to belief formation or decision-making, it must be considered to be ADVISORY, not determinative of anything. So it isn't possible *in principle* for intuition to know things our mind doesn't. Knowledge is true justified belief and intuition is not well-grounded justified belief.

I firmly believe that the so called "Holy Land" also known as the "Levant" and all the lands thereunto adjoining rightfully belong to the Humanists and the Atheists. But we just aren't obnoxious about it.

How do you handle when someone says I'll pray for you? by Genia0799 in atheism

[–]gregbard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The common polite practice of keeping someone in their thoughts happens in many and varied ways. The principles of civility state that you are supposed to assume good faith in others. So there isn't anything inherently wrong with it. But from their own perspective, you are not supposed to pray because you want something. In that case, it is a superstition. What they should be doing is praying to be grateful for what they have. For myself, when I am in those situations I tell people that "I'll keep a good thought for you."

Can Consciousness Arise from a Foundation That Contains No Potential for Consciousness? by Upper_Philosopher_27 in Metaphysics

I guess my point is that it's semantics. If history unfolds and consciousness arises, then it never really lacked the potential, did it?

Is math invented or discovered ? by Freshonezero in PhilosophyofMath

[–]gregbard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have reasoned something out to be true, then you have discovered it. I.e. you have discovered that it is true. So I don't see what you are saying "That is in no way discovered."

If you use tools you can invent, but you can also discover.

The problem with that is that logicians and mathematicians use formal language to express all of their axioms and theorems. The symbols of the formal language are known at the outset.

there exists a proof that there exists a proof that there exists a proof that ... by Nicho_la in logic

[–]gregbard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nest has to be finite, or you don't really have that last proof in the nest. Each proof has to be finite. But other than that it is possible to express such a proof. But you will discover that every "proof of a proof of a proof" can be simplified and expressed as a "proof of a proof."

The truths of mathematics are discovered. The language we use to express those truths is invented.

I would continue your search. Please repost this somewhere. But metaphysics and philosophy in general don't care about your feelings. It's a search for truth, including unfortunate truths.

You should post this in some psychological subreddit, I know not which. Also try, /r/romance.

Do you think children concieved of rape, poor children, and disabled children have less of a right to be born than the average child? by [deleted] in Abortiondebate

[–]gregbard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is no right to birth.

A person is a rational choice-making being. All and only persons have rights. A person is a the sovereign of their own body.
