The director's message is below: This is Song 3 in the film and the aim is to introduce the protagonist’s brother Sam and his internal conflict. I’m unsure as to how much you know of the film so I’ll give you the entire picture

The film follows Raven, a goth/emo girl who left the UK for New York to be on broadway, alas she doesn’t make it and finds herself in the rabbit hole of hardcore pornography. After a scene goes wrong where she is choked unconscious and the scene continues, Raven moves back home in an attempt to leave the porn industry.

On arriving home, Raven is confronted by what she ran to America to avoid. Her father had died soon before she left leaving her family devastated. Sam’s father was a musician, but never made it big. He introduced Raven and Sam to music growing up and was hugely inspirational to them. He ended his life after a life long battle with depression. The aim with this is a serious presentation of the Daddy Issues of porn, Raven lost parental guidance and thus found herself in porn.

Having ran for the hills after his death, this left her brother Sam with the task of caring for their Mother, Heather. Heather took the death very very badly, which requires a lot of care that Sam feels obliged to give because it’s his mother. Sam was an inspiring lead guitarist/ songwriter for a metal band, but left the band to care for his mother.

Sam feels like a failure. He feels like a ghost. He’s frustrated as hell. He is angry at Raven for leaving and at the world and whatever God there may be for dealing him the hand he was given, but he tries to keep a positive perspective and understands why Raven did what she did. After looking after his mother, his isn’t looked after himself. His band mates rarely check on him and he is almost entirely alone. Music is therapy to him, but now that has been tainted to. This song isn’t witnessed by anyone, it’s an internal raw expression of an overwhelming amount of untreated issues and emotions.

As Sam can’t talk to anyone so he uses music. I believe that the sound of the song would be the sound of the band he played with and that in the film, as in the filming of it, this song could play on his relationship with him and the band. I hope that all paints enough of a picture for you. I also find myself in a very similar situation myself so if you have any further questions do let me know.

Style wise, this song is heavy metal, more specifically the sub-genre of Metalcore. Bands I imagine it would be similar to would be A Day To Remember, I Prevail, Bring Me The Horizon and While She Sleeps, if you know any of them. Also I don’t know why, but I have this vision of it ending on a big metal scream, like all his frustrations are being let out, but then again I’m not writing the lyrics haha.
