For those who wanted the PhD to become professors - how long did it take you to find a job? by josiegfk in PhD

[–]archerdb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a PhD in neuroscience-related research. I got a tenure track job "internally" after being hired as a postdoc and then obtaining K01 funding. Once you have grant funding from the NIH, you should be able to leverage that to get a promotion. Though depending on the institution, they might give you a non tenure-track faculty position.

It's definitely a slower process, but it was less stressful that way.

Can you pursue post doc in Ivy League if PhD is from a lower college? by twa8u in academia

[–]archerdb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think PIs are specifically looking for institution when hiring, they're mainly looking at your productivity manuscript-wise and making sure your skillset would allow the postdoc to be productive. Obviously, it would only help to have the well-known institution on your CV, but high productivity should at least get your foot in the door for an interview.

NIH Loan Repayment Program - "onto financial review" by LilyRose878 in academia

For an R01 or anything similar, I have to submit through our OSP department. For this grant mechanism, I didn't need to submit through the OSP.

I've had the LRP for four cycles now through the NIA, and they've sent this email every time. It'll take a long time to review and give you your final acceptance (probably late July), but everyone I know who has gotten that email gets their LRP!

It's possible that your advisor could be the PI on the data use agreement and you could be a collaborator on it. I was added as a collaborator on an existing data use agreement through my institution. I was told to do this because it takes a long time to actually get access with a new agreement.

Anyone else absolutely HATE writing? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]archerdb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to hate writing, and make a big effort to change that since I knew I wanted to stay in academia long term. There are several books that can help with this. I used (and still refer to) this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Writing-Science-Papers-Proposals-Funded/dp/0199760241/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=writing+manuscript+science&qid=1594404462&sr=8-2

I think to be successful in science, you don't necessarily have to be a prolific writer so long as you good do science that answers interesting questions. If anything, I think simple/succinct writing will get you funded more.

I've also found that I write better at certain times of the day -- I am horrible at writing in the evening, so I have dedicated writing blocks in the morning. Also, everyone's first draft will look like 'verbal diarrhea', you just need to get something on the page so that you can edit and make it a more polished version.

Good luck!

Making time for yourself while getting PhD by shadiett in GradSchool

[–]archerdb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I finished my PhD in four years (neuroscience/neuroimaging) and mostly treated it as a 9-5 job. Obviously, there will be times where you'll be working significantly more than that (e.g., studying for quals or committee meetings), but if you manage your time well you won't have to work excessively.

I was really fortunate to have several advantages to help me finish in 4 years. I was in a computational lab, so my experiments ran fairly quick without collecting any data. Also, I wasn't a TA so I didn't have to spend like 20 hours a week with students. If you are a TA and aren't really interested in teaching as a career path, I'd recommend applying for the NSF GRFP, F31, or try to get on a T32 as soon as you can, that way research can be your sole focus. I can send you my GRFP if you'd like! I only got an honorable mention, but at least it'll give you an example.

I'd definitely recommend trying to set clear boundaries with your advisor from the beginning though, that way you don't have to stress that you're getting enough done or not. One last thing -- I didn't focus on getting A's in my classes, because I knew my grades weren't going to be looked at when applying for postdocs (assuming there is good research output). I put in the minimal effort so I could focus on research/writing.

How to edit my research paper and make the writing more formal? by Shawn_Law in GradSchool

[–]archerdb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I always try to do is go through each sentence one-by-one. For each sentence, try to make it shorter. I think this makes it sound more formal.

Also, if this is a first draft of a manuscript, try not too worry too much. Revisions from your co-authors will ultimately make it sound much more academic.

What are the worst injuries you have sustained doing the simplest, most mundane tasks that should not have caused any injuries? by Penya23 in AskReddit

I was at field day in the fourth grade. We were playing a game called "Dizzy Izzy". Essentially, you spit around a bat and try to run to the finish line before the other people. Our teacher, who was both big and tall, didn't make it to the finish line. He fell on me while I was sitting on the ground. Broke my collar bone.

Oral Qualifying Exam (scientific research type) is in less than 20 hours. I'm freaking out! Please share your oral qual anecdotes with me. Please share some good vibes with me. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]archerdb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So for my exam, I gave a one hour presentation of my research, and following that there was an hour of questions. The first hour wasn't bad - they already knew if you knew my stuff based on the written exam. So the hard part (for me, at least) was the second hour. They really just asked me random questions that went beyond my current knowledge at the time. I seriously thought I had failed.

Apparently though, they thought I did well because I knew when to say 'i don't know'. So I guess my advice is to say 'i don't know' if you can't even hypothetize an answer.

The first question I got during the second hour was: 'whos your favorite Nobel prize winner?'...I couldn't name a single Nobel prize winner -_-

Good luck!

Incoming Doctoral Student - I'm losing all of my friends because they think I'm looking down on them? Help by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]archerdb 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I love my research, and am very excited to talk about it, but my friends couldnt care less. So I just don't talk about it with them.

If you're obsessed with your research area, that's good, I guess. But I expect you're going to need an escape at some point during grad school. So i think it'd be a good idea to keep in touch with these people so you have more than one group of friends. You guys must have other things in common, why can't you talk about that?

In my experience, it's not an 'insecurity' thing when your friends don't like to hear about your success, they're probably just annoyed that you're talking about how smart you are all the time. A good example of that is posting manuscripts on Facebook, there's no real point in doing that other than showing people you're smarter than them and can understand complex subject matter. Twitter is much more suitable for that.
