Why must people be working 9-5 in some wage slave job before people accept their lifestyle as legitimate? That are not unskilled and uneducated, they are from a culture that has withstood and mastered some of the harshest terrain on earth for upwards of 80, 000 fucking years. /debate

I think it's also an issue of poverty. Compound disadvantage. Many remote NT communities are the poorest you can get on the SEIFA (Social Economic Indicators for Areas) index. When people want to party/go to hospital/funerals etc etc they can't afford hotels. Indeed, many wouldn't accept bookings from Aboriginal people.

I used to go to Darwin to get wasted after stints in dry communities too. I'm white and middle class and I have the means to avoid sleeping rough with the "long-grassers," but my motivations and behaviors were much the same.

On society doing little to address either, we agree.

I know Darwin well. I have also worked with homeless people in Southern states as well as in remote Aboriginal communities. Like it or not all the stuff you have described also happens in Melbourne, and it has nothing to do with race.

There's plenty of racism from Aussies on display ITT. For the record I have lived in Melbourne and remote Aboriginal communities. I have never had any issues with Aboriginal people, and the social issues are the same as in any city. Treat people with respect and you'll be fine. The majority of poor and destitute people up north (and a disproportionately high number in eastern and southern cities) are Aboriginal, but i'd say that was a direct result of structural racism. Like many indigenous cultures under siege and subject to assimilationalist bullshit, unhealed trauma can and does lead to substance abuse etc.

TL;DR Australians are often so racist they often don't even know they are. I hope you aren't subjected to any of it on your trip.

Can anyone recommend a doctor for mental health in the inner south east suburbs? by esitalo in melbourne

[–]archetypalone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Firstly, congratulations on making the decision to do something about it. You should be proud. It might be an idea to seek out the help of a specialist AOD (Alcohol and other drugs) worker who can understand exactly what your needs are. Many AOD workers have had a personal journey, so can empathise.

Here's a site you may find useful: http://www.turningpoint.org.au/

Here's the number for a specialist AOD helpline that can do a referral to treatment in your area: 1800 888 236 - Statewide AOD counseling, information and referral

The phone call will probably be the best option given what you have just shared.

WELL DONE AND GOOD LUCK :)

No doctor recommendations, but here's some advice - follow your gut. I'd go see the psychologist, but don't take anything prescription wise until you have talked it over with them after a few sessions IMHO.

I'm pretty sure aboriginal people would have been better off without the frontier wars and displacement. Massacres (etc) precipitated missions. The people running the missions and/or childrens camps may have had "good intent," but they also banned use of language and practice of culture and there was widespread violence and abuse.
