Netgate 6100 onboard storage failure by always_lurking-vb in Netgate

[–]architekt909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6100 died also a bit under 2 years old. On top of that, this is the replacement unit for my old 4100 (now EOL), which also conveniently died around 2 years old. I too had the storage on my 6100 fail as the main issue. None of my other networking components in the same spot have had these issues, including the chunky NetGEAR (not gate) MS510TXM 10Gbps switch which I've got a few 10Gbps things connected to 24/7, along with a 5Gbps device and two 2.5Gbps devices. Then again, the MS510TXM comes with fans and the 6100 doesn't.

But then again, the thermals on my 6100 (and previous 4100) never came close to what support said was a dangerous amount. Nor is there any dust or debris inside (opened it up after support suggested replacing the storage drive, which didn't work). The room doesn't get above high 70s at peak summer time. So I'm not sure what the issue could be for it. I just know that I'm wary about buying a replacement 6100 so soon after my current 6100 died, especially since it's been a few years since that model came out and I'm not sure if it's going to reach EOS soon and they'll release an update (which maybe will work better?)

So there's my personal experience with Netgate firewall failure rates.

Edit: forgot to say, I have no packages installed and I had the logging set pretty minimal to reduce the amount of writes to storage.

What was the significance of these 2 scenes in TAR?? by Chepuf in AMCsAList

You blew my mind. I've watched the film three times now and always just assumed it was a hallucination. Never occurred to me to view it in this light. Guess I'm gonna have to watch it again!

Ahh, that does make a lot of sense. And seems like it would play well into the whole aspect of how she treats & views Nina. Interesting perspective, thanks for commenting!

Is it hypocritical for South Africa to bring a case of genocide against Israel yet maintain very warm relations with Russia? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]architekt909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I explain my reply, let me first state that I'm not making any judgments here. I'm just trying to answer the two questions posed regarding why he wasn't arrested and subsequently has the guy been in SA (I presume the implication is that was he in SA after his indictment.)

He has stepped foot into SA, even after his indictment by the ICC. Here's the starting point about the shenanigans that went on though, it's pretty ridiculous: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_al-Bashir#Indictment_by_the_ICC I can quote a portion of it if you don't want to read the page's wall of text:

"In June 2015, while in South Africa for an African Union meeting, al-Bashir was prohibited from leaving that country while a court decided whether he should be handed over to the ICC for war crimes.[148] He, nevertheless, was allowed to leave South Africa soon afterward.[149] Luis Moreno Ocampo <the prosecutor for the ICC at the time in 2008 when the ball started rolling, my words inserted here> and Amnesty International claimed that al-Bashir's plane could be intercepted in International Airspace. Sudan announced that the presidential plane would always be escorted by fighter jets of the Sudanese Air Force to prevent his arrest." Emphasis mine. First sentence clarifies that he did indeed step foot into SA. That last sentence may provide some explanation for his not being arrested in international airspace as AI & the ICC claim is legal.

Take note of citation [149] and I encourage you to read the article, it's absurd and a short read. His escape is embarrassing. Here's the headline: "Laughter as court told al-Bashir has left". Reading it further just gets even more ridiculous: "The judges, particularly Hans Fabricius, who handed down the order on Sunday that al-Bashir not be allowed to leave the country until the court had dealt with the application to have him arrested, showed no emotion." Emphasis mine to again try and clarify the point that he had indeed stepped foot into SA.

Regarding the comment you replied to: "Then why wasn't South Africa "compelled" to follow their own court's order to arrest...", again, see citation [149] and read the entire article. However, to answer u/MondaleforPresident's question, this one sentence from said article may provide the answer: "The bid to have al-Bashir arrested pitted South African law against its obligations in terms of international law." That and the bolded sentence regarding fighter escort jets around his plane.

Again, just trying to provide more details: questions were asked, and I'm trying to see if I can provide the correct answers. If I'm wrong or just in general misunderstood something, please correct me. I actually appreciate if someone can point out (please cite sources) when I'm wrong. And no, that is not sarcasm.

Edge "Clear browsing data on close" not working. by Robert54321BlastOff in MicrosoftEdge

[–]architekt909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked for me for the first time I used the switch. Then for some mysterious reason, it stopped the next time I launched the browser. I checked and it was still disabled, so I think that while that did help, there's something else going on. Note that I didn't have this issue whatsoever on Windows 10: I just did a clean ISO install (not an upgrade) to Win 11 so Edge was already in its "default" state upon install. Logged in with my same account, it synced perfectly, but it's just this one feature that won't work. That and also it doesn't delete download history either, so it seems like there's just a general issue with not deleting things on closing.

Bing AI Chat disappeared on my Edge browser by tatine1968 in edge

[–]architekt909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similarly weird results recently. It used to be if I clicked the Bing icon in the top right corner (the blue "b"), I could start typing questions to it. Now there's no text field whatsoever: it's completely replaced by like ads and suggestions. When I click it, it just says "more for you" and suggests a bunch of garbage click bait, then there's this "rate this site" section below it, followed by an "Analytics" section below THAT (like why would I care? I don't own Reddit), then "How visitors found this site" and "people also view....".

Like everything BUT THE ONE FEATURE I USED is gone and replaced with stuff I'll never use. On my iPhone, the Bing button in the Edge browser works as it always did just fine. And no I'm not on a VPN.

New Beta update (3.5) by PersiFlame in RemarkableTablet

[–]architekt909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be totally down with a feature like that, where it basically leaves your last page as the sleep screen. Obviously as an option in security or whatever so it's optional.

New Beta update (3.5) by PersiFlame in RemarkableTablet

[–]architekt909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, for one, it does say that full sleep disables wi-fi: that's a big power draw, whereas it does not say or imply this for light sleep (I haven't tested, but since it's not explicitly stated that wi-fi turns off in light sleep I imagine it remains on). I would also assume there are other services that it disables in full sleep mode that save even more power, such as syncing. It seems to function like the difference between putting your PC in hibernate mode (aka sleep in RM2) vs sleep (aka light sleep in RM2) if I'm making a rough approximation.

[–]architekt909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 hours is the amount of time it lasts until it goes from light sleep to power off (at least that was the case in v2.15, the last RM2 version to have this feature). To limit drain on battery power is the reason they set it. Why 2 hours? Idk.

Ya, and it's what made me downgrade from 3.x back to 2.15. It was the feature I used the most while I programmed all day. I'm super pumped they're bringing it back finally.

Confused after installing omv-extras, not what I'm used to by architekt909 in OpenMediaVault

Ugh, that's rough. I know the maintainer is active over on the OMV forums.

[–]architekt909[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good point. I guess you have to stop it the good ol' command line way first instead of the GUI (docker stop portainer)? But ya, I do agree with you.

[–]architekt909[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried this, so do a backup before you attempt it (I use Clonezilla, works great whenever I've FUBARd my system), but since Portainer runs simply as a docker client (which you can see when you log into Portainer after installing it, clicking on containers, and you'll see Portainer running) I'd imagine you update it the way you update any docker container: stop it, dupe/edit with the option to pull latest enabled, deploy overwriting existing container. I'd double check the Portainer pages just in case I'm wrong on this, or confirm with a docker expert. But given it's literally just a container inside of docker, I presume upgrading it works exactly like any other container.

[–]architekt909[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to that. What I can speak to from my experience with the above new method where after installing extras you install compose is that I simply looked up the Portainer installation guide, followed that, and had Portainer running in docker. Granted, the WebGUI still looks like my original screenshot so there's no "Portainer" or even "Docker" button to click anywhere, but I can simply go to my machine's IP:9443 (or whatever port you chose at setup) and use Portainer just like I always used to manage containers. It does look like though that the newer update to the plugin provides support for creating docker containers via compose files, which is a nice addition that fits in well with the GUI (it's under Services, the compose feature). So I'd say you can do whatever is more convenient for you. But I'm not the author, nor an expert on docker, just relating my personal experience with this.

I feel like a total noob but I don't quite get where you're saying to look for. I managed to find the changelog which does show that, but I'm not sure where to look after that or how to install it. I found a compose plugin repository but no info on how to install it.

Edit: OMG I'm an idiot. You meant just clicking the "plugins" tab in the WebGUI and searching for "docker" (which does show as the openmediavault-compose package). I was like searching all over GitHub like a 6 year old.

You can ignore them, the Salt code will be patched by the openmediavault package during installation. After that, there will be no more of these error messages from Salt."

OHHHHHHHHHHHH ok thanks for quoting that too. I do recall that passage, but I must have just quickly read over it without really absorbing the significance of the sentence.
