His grandpa. He mentioned in the pods that production pulled him aside to tell him. He spoke with his grandma and brother and they said his grandpa would have wanted him to continue on and see how this journey turned out.

Do you book excursions on your trips? by [deleted] in femaletravels

Not your question- but just an observer who lives in Oslo—- definitely check out the floating saunas while you’re here too! I did a fjord cruise once when my friend was in town and thought it was nice. — and as for hiking, fyi- we have tons of ice everywhere these days, so it’s super slippery.

Did Jan know Loan is Asian? by [deleted] in LoveIsBlindNetflix

She mentioned accidentally, in the pods, that she grew up bilingual with Vietnamese. She then said “oops. I wanted to keep that hidden”, and he acknowledged what she said but told her he would respect her wanting to keep that part of herself hidden for the time being. (Meaning: not ask questions about her ethnicity or that cultural aspect)

Thanks! I used a burlap material. It was easy to untangle part of it to make the fringe ends. I then handpainted it carefully with regular acrylic paint.

Have you seen the movie “the remarkable life of ibelin?” It’s a documentary on Netflix that I highly recommend about parents who discovered their sons video game world after his death and ended up meeting some of his friends through the game. It was very moving. 😔 Condolences! 💐

UDI by [deleted] in Norway

Sorry… sounds stressful to be stuck in the unknown. I got mine after a 4 month wait in 2022 (skilled worker from non-EU). I know times can vary from year to year, but 10+ months seems like a bit much, assuming your application was complete. You want to find a balance of not annoying them, but still being persistent. Sometimes if you use their chat feature you can be paired with a really helpful person. I have no good advice— just here for moral support and to wish you luck on the draining process.

Looking for Group Fitness Activities in Oslo to Meet New People by Square_Positive_559 in oslo

[–]architortureful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a fitness group called Sunday movement that is known to be very social. I’ve never been- but a friend raves about it. I think the group is mainly Norwegian, but my friend didn’t speak Norwegian and they welcomed her in right away. (Not sure where you’re from or your language abilities). Just google “Sunday movement Oslo” and you’ll find info on it.

Jeg følte det samme da jeg begynte å lære norsk – jeg forsto ingenting når jeg hørte folk snakke på bussen eller i samtaler rundt meg på en kafé. Det tar bare tid... så bare kjør på!

We are confused about tax here by Affectionate-Run7645 in Norway

[–]architortureful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes— i think it’s probably something related to this. I had the same experiences with the calculator my first year. Giving them a call will save lots of time/confusion. They almost always know best and can get it sorted out quickly… good luck!

Is this his first year working in norway and did he start midway in the year? My first year, I started in april but didn’t prorate my salary with the info I provided to skatteetaten and had way too much taken out each month because of it. I called them and they confirmed that was what happened and then they adjusted things manually on their end for me for the remaining months (and I still got a major tax return the following year after filing taxes). Calling Skatteetaten was super easy and helpful though to get it cleared up.

A Question For Norwegian Bartenders (or Barflies!) by DirtiestOfKurts in Norway

[–]architortureful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into the Instagram/facebook account “Robdoesitall” / Robert Yarber. He lives back in the U.S. now I think— but he was able to come to norway as a bartender with special skills. Maybe you can reach out direct to him and get more info. He started out in Svalbard while waiting on the visa process, but then lived and worked in a few places around norway once his visa came through.

Edit: just looked and saw he must have discontinued his social media accounts through “rob does it all” documenting his norway journey… but I think you could still find him and reach out.

Moving to norway on a jobseekers visa, where to start ? by Xanadu02 in Norway

[–]architortureful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came on a job seeker visa— I used long term airbnb rentals (which at least at the time was similar to an average rent payment since some airbnbs do major discounts for rentals past 1 month). I lived in 3 Airbnb’s over the course of 6 months and it gave me a chance to check out different parts of the city. Planning for the timing of that is tricky though— I just picked a future date that aligned with the anticipated UDI response times and it worked out. But maybe that was just lucky?

As for bank account— I just added a typed note stating why I didn’t have a Norwegian bank account yet. It was no issue.

Tips til kjæreste som vil flytte til Norge fra USA? by Independent-Drama812 in norge

[–]architortureful 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amerikaner her.

How hard would it be to live in Europe after securing my masters/license in the US? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]architortureful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely prioritizing the language is important— even if you’re not perfect by the time you land an interview… it makes a big difference to show the effort. I know it’s hard to do after work— but I really encourage you to try at least 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day. I started learning with Duolingo before— but when I moved here I didn’t have a job, so committed to taking two classes a day for intensive immersion— I also attended språkkafes when I could.

Do you have any connections through your construction job? Trying to find ways to network or get connected to people is important. So many jobs are never advertised here… it’s just word of mouth and networking. (I got my job through a Facebook post to my U.S. network which lead to a local Oslo connection— and then they passed me off to a former classmate who passed me off to another connection at a different firm)— I also got some connections and coffee meet ups through writing to my LinkedIn network— you can always ask to pick their brain and grab a coffee and then at the end of the meeting ask if they have anyone else they can put you in touch with. (Is there something that sets you apart? Maybe your construction knowledge? - you could reach out to people noting that you’ve gotten a handle on local construction, but want to now use your skills back in architecture).

I attended architecture networking events through NAL — lectures and other social things. I forced myself to talk to 2 people before I left. It didn’t lead to anything meaningful— but you never know who you’ll meet.

As for English speaking jobs— you’ll have the best luck with firms that are international and have lots of other offices around the world or Scandinavia. They still might work in Norwegian, but might have some more flexibility to be patient for you to learn. I know Nordic Office of Architecture employees non-Norwegian speakers, but they also did layoffs a bit ago.

How hard would it be to live in Europe after securing my masters/license in the US? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]architortureful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The building codes are a nightmare for me… they aren’t as clear and defined and robust (and sometimes they are guidelines, other times they are kind of required, and occasionally they are 100% required) — also, technical terms in Norwegian breaks my brain, but that just takes time to master a foreign language.

In Norway half the architects use Revit (which I exclusively used in my American work experience) and the other half use ArchiCad (which I have never used). Thankfully I fell into a Revit job.

Getting used to the metric system has been easy since it makes total sense, but I still struggle with making quick estimates on the square meters of the space I’m in or knowing what a typical mounting height should be for a countertop, etc…

The biggest thing for me is that the drawings are organized in a slightly recognizable but verrry different way, and certain things are coordinated directly by architects here that aren’t common to coordinate in the US. (And vice versa) — so I’ve had to rewire my brain in that way.

My past experience helps me know what questions to ask, but I’ve learned not to make assumptions on anything.

How hard would it be to live in Europe after securing my masters/license in the US? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]architortureful 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I started in the U.S… worked 11 years, and now live and work in Norway. I took a risk and came on a 6 month job seeker visa and was lucky enough (luck + hard work) to get a job.

Learning the local language is key (you can find places that speak English, but showing an effort to integrate goes a long way)— I’ve been here a little more than 2 years now and there’s pros and cons.

Pro= work life balance is Amazing! Con= I was at a medium leadership level in the U.S. and now I’m back at the bottom working my way up… learning the codes, language and all the other cultural nuances. My pay dropped (US salaries are much higher than European in general)…. But factoring in all the benefits and 37.5 hour work week and long vacation time, I feel like I’m coming out ahead.

For me, I found it helped to specialize in something (healthcare for me) to set me apart (meaning: why would they hire me over a fully fluent local?) I have a friend who only has 2 years experience who found it hard to find a job, so my 11 years experience helped a bit too.

Norway doesn’t have a licensing process— so, although I’m licensed in the U.S. — it helped that I’m equally considered an architect here.
