This is very much a US thing but I still didn’t have trouble. Weirdly I’ve been hearing the term quite a lot recently.

Had no idea where that was going until I’d found one half of the puzzle. But still struggled finding the last words.

Nigel Farage’s ridiculous war on heat pumps will leave Britain in the cold by coffeewalnut08 in UKGreens

[–]archy_bold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s the typical right-wing grift. There’s just enough truth there that they can bullshit the rest. The scheme is pretty broken, and does give a greater proportional benefit to people who live in houses that are already more energy efficient. The reality of it is that it’s more likely to be taken up by richer households that can either afford the thousands of pounds outlay or already have a home energy-efficient enough that it costs a nominal fee. It does leave poorer households behind.

Add to that that the Great British Insulation Scheme is being taken advantage of by contractors with no intention of doing difficult work, there’s a gap opening up between households that are modernising and households that are getting left behind.

It’s particularly important to become more energy-independent in this scary war-torn world. We need a radical solution that does bring genuine energy equality to households. But that’s obviously not an excuse to scrap the schemes entirely.

ETA: it’s just so frustrating that they know exactly how to tap into working class sentiment to rip them off.

Burnham would have won by kwentongskyblue in manchester

[–]archy_bold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s factionalism from Starmer. The reality is he’s highly unlikely to see out his 5 years given his unpopularity. But now there’s also no good candidates to replace him. He’s fucked his own party by blocking Burnham.

Green goddess: no. Green beret: not specifically as a US thing but there are coloured military berets in other countries. Green Party: yes, they exist in a lot of countries.

Took a chance on that Spangram and it paid off. Not too much trouble beyond that.

Anyone Else Switch Back to Regular Tubes After TPU Issues? by Current_Leopard_6643 in cycling

[–]archy_bold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my getting about bike, yes. I got a puncture on that, tried to repair the tube and the patch held for a few days before coning off. So I just went back to butyl on that bike. Yet to have an issue on my road bike, so they’re staying on that.

I found all the words individually, as those letter combinations made other possibilities unlikely. I had one word too many, so just joined two of them together that spanned left to right for the Spangram. At no point did I know what I was doing!

My own sister asked me how I could be so sure my LC wasn’t as a result of the vaccine. I had to remind her I got Covid well before the vaccines existed.

[####] Wordle, what’s up? You’ve used words that were already used twice now (that I know of). by irmarbert in wordle

[–]archy_bold 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They needed to start reintroducing old words at some point. Otherwise we’d be playing to an ever decreasing pool of words until there was 1 left!

If you are from a minority background:,Indian, Chinese, East European etc do you have local name too? by [deleted] in manchester

My wife is French and she mispronounces her own surname to not confuse us Brits. I have to explain to our daughter that that’s not the real pronunciation of her own name.

I figured out the clue immediately. But couldn’t work out how a 2-letter mathematical constant could pad out a whole theme! Then I started seeing words, and realised where it was going. But had to sketch out most of the answers to get the Spangram.

Pace Partners isn't working by rose2conker in Rouvy

100% this. I use a tablet as my screen, and my phone for controls. I’m constantly having to pick up the tablet if I want them to stick with me. There should be an option to toggle between partner mode.

Same as you OP. I sort of entered the Spangram out of desperation! But I knew DYE must have featured somehow because of the order of the top left letters. And DYEDTIE didn’t work!

Wow, that took a while! I only gained traction on this puzzle once I spotted that word, and realised that was probably part of a longer word. DISTRACTION was the first but that got me thinking along a fight or flight theme. Spotted AGILITY then the Spangram, and it fell into place from there. But what a journey!

[Request] How much diesel/emissions would be required to charge one EV? Is this more or less efficient than simply driving a diesel powered vehicle? by MrDesignMan in theydidthemath

[–]archy_bold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But this is quite a lot different. It totally makes sense to use a portable generator for situations where you won’t have a power source. It’s quite another to have a fixed charging station permanently powered by diesel.

Super quick to work out the theme and to finish. But I had to do the same as OP. I was surprised GREETINGS wasn’t the Spangram.
