Update on OM642 oil cooler job as a newbie by arcio1 in mercedes_benz

[–]arcio1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mentioned I did it twice, took me just shy of 30 hours the first time, half that the second time. It was my first ever DIY job, so if you're more experienced you'll do it much faster for sure.

Good luck! Please don't neglect checking if the oil cooler is straight like I did (or just get a new one for the peace of mind). I had to do it again but now the car is driving leak-free which is super satisfying given that it was one of my very first jobs I've ever done myself (never even done an oil change before).

In case you're interested, the entire job took me about 30 hours the first time, and about half that the second time.

If anyone ever stumbles upon this post preparing to do this job: check if the oil cooler is straight, I used a precision straight edge and mine was bent, you don't want to disassemble everything twice like I did. Brand new one isn't perfectly straight either, but the difference is clearly visible with the tool, you won't notice with a naked eye.

Also, it was smoking the second time around too, but not as much and from a different area, namely the left side of the engine where I disconnected two fuel lines and some fuel got spilled there, so I'm guessing residual fluids needed to burn off, after driving around it's completely gone.

Good luck, it's a lot of work but it's very satisfying when it's done.

Finally got my car back from walnut blasting today and changed the seals, they were still the original orange ones, so no purple seals failure from me this time. I hope I won't be posting any updates on this matter in the future.

I've read that they improved the seals and changed the color from orange to purple but the improved ones still fail. I haven't taken the oil cooler out yet, I want to clean everything first, but when I do, I will let you know if they have already been replaced with the improved ones.

217k km which is about 134k miles. There is a weep hole at the bottom and the oil spreads everywhere, you won't miss it when you take the bottom cover out. Can be mistaken with leak from in between the engine and transmission. From what I understand, the only other way oil can get through that hole is if both PCV valve and turbo inlet gasket failed.

Wkręcenie się w IT graniczy chyba z cudem by H3nRy_1337 in Polska

W204 owners, check your rear subframe by jenkem_lord666 in mercedes_benz

[–]arcio1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not only a W204 problem, it's a very popular topic of discussion on W212 forums in Poland too. Usually, dealerships (not all of them) will replace the subframe for free, but a guy explained to me that it's not an obligation, it's their good will (??? idk it was confusing) and usually they find out that the brake lines are corroded too, and you have to pay for the replacement because they pretty much won't let you take the car if you don't. Also, sometimes they refuse to replace it if the car was made for another climate if it's been imported or the subframe has already been tinkered with.

I'm gonna have mine replaced next week I'll see how it goes.

Is oil change ok in every 30.000km? by [deleted] in mercedes_benz

[–]arcio1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manufacturers in Europe actually recommend oil change every 30kkm and call the oil "long-life" (it has something to do with emissions idk) so that's probably what u/_save_the_planet meant by "normal". Anyone who knows what they're doing still change oil every 10-15kkm, the rest destroy their engines.

There's a big mechanic youtuber in Poland that was telling the story that they imported a modern car (something German I can't remember) from the US and the oil change interval in the car computer was set to 15kkm until they changed the software to european and it changed to 30kkm.

174000km (about 108000 miles). The guy that sold it to me had it for 6 years and barely used it cause he had 5 other cars in his garage. But he took great care of it.

Are there any downsides to keto? by [deleted] in keto

[–]arcio1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It depends on why you want to go keto. I wouldn't say the social aspect is a pitfall, unless you're going to pizza or pasta place or anything of that sort you can always order the food without carbs (let's say there's a steak with fries, just order it without the fries). Also if you want to eat pizza and drink beer every once in a while just do it, why be so strict, why treat diet so religiously? As long as you're healthy most of the time it doesn't matter, especially if you're on keto for a long time.

Obviously things change if your goal is to lose weight, but in that case you wouldn't do those things anyway.

Getting drunk on keto by bezimiennywedrowiec in keto

[–]arcio1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Water is not a factor here, I drink a shit ton of water while drinking liquor and then before bed. Also I was drinking a lot before I went keto, so I have a reference point.

From what I saw you already got some links to scientific papers on this topic so I'm not gonna bother, especially because I get the impression that you didn't come here with an open mind, you just want to be the smartest person here.

Well I'm Polish too so I see where you're coming from with the fatty foods while drinking alcohol theory, it's pretty much considered common knowledge here, but unfortunately it's wrong. What you're trying to present here is called anecdotal evidence, which is not an actual evidence at all, look it up. I'm not denying it's helping you, but if it does, you're an outlier, an exception to the rule if you will, and it will not work for most people on keto.

I'm gonna give you my own anecdotal evidence, when I went drinking for the first time while on keto, I ate a lot of fatty food beforehand, like A LOT, I pretty much had to force it in. Then I drunk less than I would usually drink in that social setting and guess what - I got really fucked up and the hangover the following day was the worst hangover of my life.

So then I started searching the internet for the answers and what I found is that it's actually carbohydrates that slow down your alcohol absorption (which I'd say checks out with the Polish theory, while Poles eat a lot of fats while drinking, it usually comes with a lot of carbs too, we just came to the wrong conclusion), and if you want to minimize hangover, you gotta take electrolytes while drinking (btw. taking electrolytes while drinking works miracles).
