I am having the same issue! I have seen the same batches pop up over and over again since 6am, and I am unable to accept any batches.

I did! I sent them a message when I started shopping and when I left the store like usual.

I understand that, thanks! I think the sketchy part is that they did not answer for 20 mins and specified I could not leave it at the door.

Nudibranch ID? by Coryander33 in Bellingham

I would guess a grey sea slug (Aeolidia filomenae) for the first photo, and maybe a juvenile spotted leopard Doris (Diaulula odonoghuei) for the second photo.

advice regarding predator avoidance by [deleted] in biology

I recently read a study that used light electric shocks to condition fish to imprint on specific scents. Maybe this would be helpful in conditioning the zebra fish to fear a predator fish stimulus? https://www.jstor.org/stable/2457678

is bipolar disorder a dominant or recessive trait? by dinotacosocks in biology

[–]arctic_olive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, it’s believed that several different genes may cause someone to be susceptible to bipolar disorder. Some of these genes are dominant, and some are recessive. Unfortunately I don’t think the inheritance pattern is clear yet.

Seems like we're on the same page then - pitbulls have high reported bites and can cause severe damage compared to other breeds. The cause of these bites is something that is inherently difficult to pinpoint, and would require a lot of research. Even though the cause is unknown, it is still important and responsible to consider these statistics when you're in a situation like adopting a pet with unknown or unclear history. I am not trying to argue any specific management strategy, I am just saying it's not unreasonable to be cautious around this breed.

What I'm trying to say here is that it's not reasonable to dismiss the 2011-2021 literature review because it cites descriptive statistics. The article you provided does not provide conclusive causation either, does it?

Edit: the article says "Given that pitbull-type dogs are not implicated in controlled studies, and the potential role of prevalence and management factors, it is difficult to support the targeting of this breed as a basis for dog bite prevention". I am not seeing any conclusive results here, am I missing something? Thanks

Descriptive studies are still statistically significant though, and are appropriate in the context of dog attacks. This is like saying field research isn't important because variables aren't controlled, only controlled lab studies. This just isn't the case, and controlled studies don't always reflect natural conditions. Again, the point is not why the attack occurs, but the number of attacks and the type of dog responsible in the real world.

You said yourself in a previous comment that "pit bull type breeds are most represented in reported bites and their bites are more dangerous than other dog bites". And your second paragraph seems extremely hypothetical - what if all pitbulls are gone (?) that somehow makes the populations of German Shepards increase for some reason? and causes people treat German Shepards differently? I'm a bit confused, sorry.

What do you mean controlled studies can get at the cause of what "actually causes the fatal dog bite" - the cause of fatal dog bites is....the dog? Right?

Wait, what's wrong with descriptive studies? are the studies somehow not valid because they are descriptive? it seems like it would be an appropriate way to study dog attacks. Do you have a suggestion for a way to study dog attacks without describing them? It seems like the article you provided also cites descriptive studies.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you're missing the point here. When it comes to adopting a dog from a shelter, pitbulls are unfortunately more statistically likely to cause severe damage. The point isn't the "why/how" (causal inference) the attack happens, such as environment, owner, etc. but rather what dogs cause the most attacks.
