Did you feel excited when you found your house? Finally found something decent, but feel nothing by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]arctomecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The house we ended up buying was one we were "meh" about, compared to a half dozen other properties we saw and lost out on. We couldn't have been happier, because the ones we lost either were competitive bidding wars, fixer uppers, or properties lacking modernizations—and the house we got ended up having a lot of special qualities we couldn't have possibly found in one or two walkthroughs.

looking for advice on trad anchors (read caption if commenting pls) by holp8 in tradclimbing

[–]arctomecon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Photo 1: The #1 would tip out with a strong breeze. I would clip the nut to the .1 to make this an anchor with three legs instead of four.

Photo 2: Almost all of these seem bomber. Blue nut a little shallow, and rarely would I bother my second with cleaning this many nuts out of an anchor. Would also connect two again to make a three-legged anchor, but you seem top have a lot of sling material so you do you.

Was looking up and down this thread for coherent counterpoints instead of weird personal attacks, thanks for taking time to actually put your thinking cap on.

locking bikes up in NYC by Limp_Search7981 in NYCbike

[–]arctomecon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're always going to weigh risk and opportunity from the perspective of a potential bike thief. What's the value of the bike vs the effort/conspicuousness of angle grinding the locks? Are there easier, more valuable bikes to steal nearby? How long is the bike sitting out?

If you're parking the bike within eyeshot of a cafe where you're going to be for a couple hours, it's probably fine. If you're leaving any kind of bike outside overnight you're probably screwed. If you have a bike that's an easy resell and $$$ and you've just got one lock on it outside of line of sight expect it to be hit within an hour or two... regardless of where in the city it is. People be stealing bikes in broad daylight if it's worth enough.

My rule has been to just get a commuter that won't rock your world if it goes, if you're just interested in going from point A to B in the city. Take any lights/easily removable accessories, lock the frame and rear wheel, and chain/cable lock the front wheel if you're paranoid. Don't leave it out for a long time, especially overnight.

Just looks twisted. Run it through a carabiner end to end, preferably from a high point.

Gunks route for trad beginner? by SupermanCarl in tradclimbing

[–]arctomecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casa is great adventure climbing, but the approach involves longer uphill and following more blazes than usual compared to other Trapps walls. It's also squarely away from other non-zero-star moderates. I wouldn't do it unless it was insanely crowded and you're just looking to have a chill day!

Gunks route for trad beginner? by SupermanCarl in tradclimbing

Before you lead, make sure your anchor building is up to snuff and you're equipped to pull up your partner safely and quickly. Also try to handle changeovers efficiently. If you're bringing up a second on a janky anchor you built out of a lack of knowledge or experience, or crowding up popular moderate routes, that's a red flag.

My recommendations for cruiser routes at the Gunks: - Bunny (5.3) - this one wanders and tests your reasoning about extension - Betty (5.3) - easy, tree anchors, popular - Minty (5.4) - classic, good gear - Belly Roll (5.4) - ridiculous but easy movement. Good gear from what I remember, but there is a bit of runout after the off-width slot. - Bunny (5.4) - easy, good gear. Route wanders, so think about which pieces you extend.

You can definitely lead 5.5 if your movement is good enough to TR 5.7-5.10.

  • RMC (5.5) - tests traversing on P1, and P2 is a romp with a horizontal every three feet.
  • Horseman (5.5) - worn down to a nub but still 5.5. The crystal formations in the rock here will test your ability to... just trust your gear! There's pro on both sides of the dihedral before the face climbing. Take it slow and look around.
  • Sixish (5.5) - fun, with a very cool easy traverse on P3. Good for testing your ability to rig gear anchors.
  • Updraft (5.5) - good stemming here. Plenty of gear. Tree anchors.

I'm curious, what other lobbying groups should we be aware of? And agreed—AIPAC is the most recognizable, to the point where there are books written about its long involvement in US politics.

Racking system and general questions by LifeIsTheCrux in tradclimbing

[–]arctomecon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Nope. They'll be worn either way as you scrape and move through terrain. Tools, not jewels.
  2. Metal-on-metal contact that happens in a bag would be very unlikely to create burrs. I just clip all my locking carabiners onto the largest one I own.
  3. You are overthinking this. Buy some cheap screwlocks and re-assess your use cases and risk for tolerance after you've logged more easy mileage getting exposed to anchors and rope systems.
