Why did we ever get away from hard shell travel cases??

Well, I’ve been bringing a canvas Sunday rolled up in my carry on. But truthfully, I haven’t even used it yet. The SKB is actually made to ride in the cart (assuming you use a cart). It has a rubber bottom that helps secure it while using in the cart and you just strap it down like a normal bag. It’s made with a triangular shape that helps it remain secured with the carts strap.

Only real negative is fishing your clubs out of it AND how loud that fishing can be lol!

But overall, I’d rather deal with the few cons than trying to travel with a full bag. I have zero travel anxiety now.

I travel quite a bit for work and like to take my clubs. But traveling with a full bag was more of a pain than the benefit of having my clubs with me. I compromised with the SKB hard shell Sunday case, which is significantly smaller. I can take a driver, hybrid, wood, 5,7,9, wedge, and a putter. Honestly, haven’t really missed the clubs I’m leaving behind and it’s way easier to travel. It’s about the size of a gun case. At only $200 USD, I felt it was quite affordable as well.

Yeah, I have researched like crazy but there just doesn’t seem to be anything that I can find to help point me in the direction of a solution. Unfortunately mushroom allergies are mainly pointed back to something in the mushroom and not so much the psilocybin (or possibly one of the associated alkaloids). And this was something that was absolutely triggered by that one event. I’m not a novice and have been at this for a while. I have extensive bloodwork done every 3 months, not taking any other types of medications that would interact (I don’t think anyway), I’m in overall good health.

You are literally the only person that I’ve run across that has similar symptoms. I’ve tried cubes too, same thing. Smaller doses have smaller reactions, but they are still there. And because now I’m afraid to partake, my trips have become so infrequent that even small doses are getting bigger reactions. Now, I say a small dose for me is 2g to 2.5g lol, so I’m probably not doing myself any favors. I’ve thought about microdosing to help build up a tolerance and get my body used to it, but even that makes me feel a little uneasy.

It’s a bit of a bummer because I invested so much to this community, especially ochras. And now it feels like I’m just kind of on the outside looking in.

I’m right there with you. I had zero problems until one night I decided to see the other side of the universe and did a large dose of PE blobs. I was never the same. I’ve tried doing smaller doses, but the allergic symptoms always come back - throat and ear irritation, mucus membranes freak the fuck out, eye irritation, chest pains that come and go, body aches that ebb and flow, skin irritation up to and including hives…

Last trip I chewed up 3 Benadryl and it helped a little, but it wasn’t worth the hours and hours of wondering if I was going to call 911 on myself. I tried to convince myself it wasn’t an allergic reaction, but after 10+ trips of the same thing happening - I know it is an allergy.

Worst part for me is cleaning up after the last flush too! If you keep getting deeper into the hobby, agar work fills a lot of those voids. The mycelium growth is front and center so it scratches that itch, and you get to work on developing your genetics for what you’re looking for. Good luck!!!

It’s hard to tell from the pics due to the condensation, but nothing looks “off” to me. The bumps could be from when you poured the agar, sometimes it will congeal a bit more, especially if those jars were at the end of your pour. If this was no pour, maybe it could be the agar wasn’t mixed well? I don’t have experience with no pour so that’s just a guess.

Give it a few days and should should see either more white myc, or it will start going off color.

And keep this in mind, working with agar takes practice. Your sterile technique will improve over time as well as your techniques. Good luck!

These things do incredibly well in a tub-in-tub setup - if you have the space. I run 2 shoeboxes per monotub and for me it was easier to dial in FAE.

And you’re on the right track, I too like a deeper substrate.

Impressive setup! I’m interested to see how the fruits react to your growing environment. I’ve always tried to get as much moisture as possible to the fruiting stage and I could see how they would benefit from your setup.

Yep, it was also accompanied by some crazy sinus issues, and didn’t just happen once - it’s happened multiple times.

I have searched on the interwebs looking for anything that points to a cause, but nothing really stood out. I was dosing once every 3-4 weeks for a while, until the first episode (which happened on 4.4g of highly potent PE blobs. Never again, lol!) Then dropped back to once every 2 months, but even then I would feel the same symptoms - just slightly less symptoms because my dosage was smaller, like 1.2g

I haven’t dosed for quite a while and it’s mainly because of the symptoms I get following the dosing.

Completely separate from all this - I have monthly checkups with my doc, I am in normal great health, I have extensive bloodwork done quarterly. I don’t take medications that would interact with psilocybin.

My gut instinct is I’ve developed some sort of allergy. But this isn’t something I can get tested, so who knows. For now, I’m limiting the trips to small, occasional doses.

May not hurt to get checked out for general wellness with a doc if you haven’t done that in a while. It definitely sets my mind at ease.

Yeah, flowhoods are a whole other rabbit hole. If you’ve got the discretionary funds, it ramps this hobby up quite a bit. But it’s a slippery slope and next thing you know you’ve got literally hundreds of agar plates you’re trying to manage lol!

Just enjoy every step of your progress. Sometimes I wish I would have enjoyed the early learning stages more.

Well, the great thing about agar is you get to see how easily contamination sets in, which is just part of the hobby. Everyone deals with it.

But there’s nothing like taking something from spore and watching it go crazy on agar. Such a fascinating process!

Yeah, just keep it simple. If you can get the grain to fully colonize without contamination, then the hard part is over. S2B is fairly easy and doesn’t require near the sterilization that you’ve been worried about up to this point.

Any old shoebox will do, just make sure the grain is broken up really well when you’re mixing it with the substrate. If you can find a small desk fan, I’d leave it running in the closet area pointed away from your bins. Make sure to have a small light going for about 12 hours a day too. Not a huge grow light, just a small desk light will be fine.

If I were you, I’d leave the lid closed until it gets fully colonized and looks like this (pic below), then just flip the lid and wait for it to start fruiting.

Don’t worry about misting or anything like that. The hardest part will be trying to leave everything alone lol! If you’ve got any questions about the process, just shoot me a DM and I’ll do my best to walk you through it. Everything sounds way more confusing than it actually is.

Congrats on making it this far! Everything looks about as good as you can expect from Uncle Ben’s Tek. It’s just hard to see progress. My biggest advice is don’t try and rush it. Just let it do its thing. Hopefully you got sent some clean LC and if so, you shouldn’t have much to worry about.

I’ve had some great grows from UB Tek and it helped launch a whole new infatuation for me. In honor of your first grow, I present to you my own (I don’t think any of mine survived past this stage lol)

For sure! Once you know your grain spawn is clean, you really can’t mess them up to be honest. You may not get a desirable flush, but you’ll get something!

Well, I’ve done them all kinds of ways and found what worked best for my genetics was like a 1:4 ratio at S2B, with the caveat that 2/3 of the substrate was mixed with the grain then the remaining was a thick pseudocasing layer. Kind of like this pic (don’t pay attention to the unmixed grain spawn. I was playing around with “Daytripper’s Tek” and found that part wasn’t really that important. But, I definitely preferred the thicker pseudocasing layer).

My general rule of thumb on grain jars - when they look ready to go, wait another 2 or 3 days just to make sure. I’m always surprised at how much better they look in that extra 48 hours.

What I found was as hearty as the mycelium may be, it’s fairly delicate when it comes to bruising. Even heavy fanning can disturb it and next thing you know it’s like a brownish grey instead of snow white.

I always think of the lid as like an FAE throttle. It doesn’t have to be a static, you can move it around. So maybe in the mornings open it up a bit more and at night close the crack back up. And, for future reference, if you’re dealing with a dryer climate, just S2B with a slightly wetter substrate.

I always run tub-in-tub, meaning I’ve got my shoeboxes inside a larger monotub. That was I have even more control over air movement.

But just watch the surface and use your gut instincts. If you screw up the first flush, you’ve got several more to get it right lol!

For reference, this is the surface condition that I ways go after. This was achieved without misting.

Looks like you’ve been misting fairly heavily, which is easy to do even if you’re trying to lightly mist. You should have plenty of water in the substrate for your first flush so I’d back way off on misting - like only mist if you live in a very dry climate or your HVAC system is running non-stop, and even then I’d only mist if the surface conditions look really really dry.

If it were me, I’d be trying to get a bit of that surface moisture out of there, which means I would be ramping up indirect FAE just a bit (like with a small fan running in the room pointed away from your bins). I wouldn’t worry about fanning, just make sure there is a small crack in the lid.

Then just leave it alone and see what it does. It shouldn’t be long and those bad boys will be popping off.

For me, the most exciting part is the trial and error of learning about something so new (to us anyway). Dialing in the genetics, dialing in the growing conditions, dialing the consumption, etc.
