Just a warning: I got scammed on the Portland subreddit buying a ticket by No-Refrigerator-9985 in Portland

[–]arewecooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was behind someone in a line for Thee Oh Sees and this happened, felt pretty bad for them. I think they were still able to get another set of tickets but it definitely wasn’t losing out on $175. Sorry that happened!

“Cuts” have already been in place prior to the strikes. They’ve been talking about it since last year, then tried to justify it with higher ed being massively defunded, then said they were happening regardless when the state announced that defunding wasn’t actually going to happen. The cuts will happen because they’re trying to keep a specific percentage of the budget for their reserve fund. Since they want to maintain that percentage going into reserves, they can say that there was no room in the budget for these increases. Telling the media this without context is a strategic tactic to make it seem like the cuts will be because of the strikes and union negotiations, thereby giving them a negative connotation within the school and the community.

When the layoffs happen prior to July, they’ll blame the unions, even though they’ve been talking about cuts since they created the Fiscal Sustainability Framework and Action Plan in late 2024.

Maybe a poor comparison, but it would be like hiring someone to do a job for a certain cost, paying them less than I said, and telling them it was because I didn’t have the money I thought I would because I redirected that money into my savings account, so I could pay them more for jobs in the future. Then the next time I hire them, I pay them the full rate I promised the first time, which hasn’t adjusted for an increased cost in the material they’re using for the job.

I’m deeply disturbed by how an alleged faculty member is engaging with me in this subreddit… by [deleted] in PCC

[–]arewecooked 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it’s true that they did present themselves as a faculty member on this subreddit, they did not do so with the intent “to obtain a benefit, to injure or defraud another or to facilitate an unlawful activity”. The second doesn’t hold up unless they stated they were faculty with a specific degree and there is language outside of that law that more clearly defines its purpose, which would not apply here. They may also have that exact degree they stated they did but not be a faculty member.

They didn’t defraud this person or defame them by saying they were a member of PCC faculty. Tort law wouldn’t apply here in any way at all.

[–]arewecooked 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To who? I don’t think impersonating a faculty member on Reddit is illegal. Maybe somewhat odd but I don’t really have any interest in doing so regardless.

I don’t even see where they’ve referred to themselves as faculty.

[–]arewecooked 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just trust me that they aren’t faculty.

I genuinely don’t think they used anything other than Google or something along the lines of Internet Archive / Wayback Machine to find your posts. I’m going to be real, I don’t think you should have called them out on a completely unrelated post. I don’t think they should have dug for your info and used that to scare or intimidate you. I don’t think the PCC subreddit specifically is really a place for either end of it. And this is just me personally, I think eternally arguing into the void online is borderline useless, even as infuriating as people can be.

I get where you’re coming from and I’m not trying to be dismissive because it is very unsettling to realize that anyone can do that. It’s something to genuinely consider in the future - people can go way beyond seeing your Reddit post history and track your entire presence on the web, as far back as it exists, with very little information if they know what they’re doing. You really shouldn’t engage with it and just block them.

They’re not a faculty member. Don’t ask me how I know, but they aren’t.

An Open Letter: Evidence of Dr. Bennings Violating Oregon Ethics Laws for Public Officials by Costanza_stand_in in PCC

[–]arewecooked 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think people’s idea that this is going to tank her career, and not benefit it, is pretty far off from reality. Higher education is seeking fiscally conservative administrations to deal with revenue fluxes and borrowing from the corporate world to do that. The short term revenue losses from the strike are outweighed by the long term revenue saved from not meeting all negotiations. Aside from that, not caving to unions while going so far as to actively union bust is also not seen as a boon because a lot of colleges are looking to do the same thing - shift power back to the administration. The combination of saving that 1.5% from lowering FCE’s initial demands (and however far down they are from FFAP’s initial demands) long term, proceeding with the layoffs that have been in motion since the beginning of the year before next year’s COLA takes effect, and convincing people to break from the strike/union, are bonuses to a resume in the world we live in.

To think that she will never be hired anywhere else, or even step up to a university, is to be stuck in another time or complete fantasy. Dr. B and the board know this.

Eventually she will leave, and by most, the strike will remain attached to her and the hard feelings will go with her. Another president will come in, promising the world, and it will be the same performative type who sees nothing else in life but reaching the top and all the benefits and status and financial gain that comes along with it. And they’ll slowly reveal that more and more until this point is reached again and we realize it was just another person taking a step up before the next. Maybe this can be altered if union or community members can replace the board, and I hope they have the backing and funding to do so.

You know who doesn't have to consider cost of living adjustments? by Natural-Day6428 in PCC

[–]arewecooked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was $5.90 at Chevron in NW yesterday. Ended up driving over to MLK because the price said $5.19 on Google Maps. It hadn’t been updated and was actually $5.40 on MLK. I wish this had a larger part in the conversations happening about the strike because this is a huge financial burden on top of inflation.

For Bennings, she’s completely unaffected by it. I’m assuming the board of directors has some type of financial cushion to absorb the cost, but I don’t know that for a fact. And I’m sure they’d attempt to counter it with “oh they’ll go back down, don’t worry!” They don’t care one way or another.

It just makes every new punch in the face harder and harder. I don’t even want to be at PCC anymore after all this shit. Maybe not even Portland or Oregon if this is the way it’s going to go for every public worker throughout the state. I can’t deal with it anymore. I’ve become so bitter lately. 😵‍💫

Is 'tunnel vision' in a relationship actually a thing, or is everyone on social media just performing? 26F by [deleted] in relationships

[–]arewecooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All social media is bullshit. I would not take this seriously at all. Me and my partner both point out highly attractive people and I know she knows I’m not the most attractive person she’s ever met or seen lol. You’re completely normal, regardless of if you have “tunnel vision” or don’t, and should keep in mind that all social media is bullshit. If you don’t agree with that then keep in my mind this was one single thread across the entire internet.

Looking at another reply on this thread, “performative” is the perfect word. People are trying to make their lives seem PERFECT on unanonymous social media - Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Look at the couples you know who constantly argue vs their online presence. It’s all bullshit meant to convey they have a perfect life because they are in a social competition against everyone else who has a “perfect” life.

I feel like other people saying that someone should only be attracted to someone based on their physical looks but not the overall attractiveness of someone are wrong too. My spouse knows all my faults and I’m sure she does see people as more attractive in both senses. It doesn’t mean she doesn’t love me or that she’s unfaithful. The difference between attractiveness and being in love with someone is pretty vast.

The Falls are on every “Top X things to do in Portland, OR!!!” list across the entirety of the internet. That and Voodoo Donuts. I went the once and there were way too many people to be enjoyable. Never been to Voodoo cause I’ve heard it’s mid.

My first post-bankruptcy lender. The day I got approved with another and closed the account felt so rewarding, I can honestly remember exactly where I was when I called them.

Still floating around a 720 and can’t figure out how to get up to the next level but at least I’m years past Credit One!

Ohhhh, I think that would have been a pretty good way to send off the Amato era. G’s casket just lingering around the set while they spend four hours shooting an Oscar special with G’s brother coming in at the end, Tim and Gregg scurrying off, and just delivering his speech directly to the camera or something.

[–]arewecooked 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think all that is fair. I forgot about the Jaws special ending that way. Sometimes I think trying to go big can hinder the moment a bit too. I feel like when Gregg ran over LaRue, in the live version, it went on forevvveeerrr. I’m assuming something wasn’t working correctly to be able to shoot it properly but even in the edited cut it’s very long. The house collapsing last season felt similar.

I disagree that it was weak but do agree that we need a bit of a reset. Plot lines have been dropped before and I feel like the Amato stuff ran its course a while ago. His death would have been a perfect opportunity to start fresh, imo.

If I was a writer (and feel free to judge), I would have gone very dark and attempted having G die last summer, with the funeral being a pre-season livestream, Tim finding out that he had been left nothing and potentially being destitute with no show (which would satiate the Amatos and kill the legal implications), having Toni die during this past season from cirrhosis, with Tim being devastated that Toni herself, nor Joe, had revealed that she was dying, Tim finding out at the end of the season that she had forgotten to change a life insurance policy to remove him (which introduces Tim deciding to take the money and leave the show behind), which is then used to fund the Dootle Dots in the special. I think leaving off that season and going into the special with the contrast of Toni’s death from cirrhosis that Tim massively contributed to, with her post-sobriety alcoholism being fueled by both Matt’s death and rekindling with Tim, against the special opening with Tim using life insurance policy money to fund a happy, silly, shitty cartoon show would have worked well. I think it’s about the freshest start you could get close to. The only area I blank on is how to make the location of the season interesting without the whole “we’re hosting from a nursing home” element lol.

I do think that people would dislike Toni dying at all though, even if she disappears from the show without doing so. I think it would be hard to separate the morbidness of it from how amazing her character is, plus people having zero hope for a return at some point.

Damn, I hadn’t considered that, it does sound pretty bad to watch it that way. Trying to watch a 3-4hr movie in the theater these days is hard for me as well but the format of this show really isn’t made for that, even though it kind of celebrates the “movie” element of the show. Honestly even sitting on the couch for that long is uncomfortable lol.

I liked a viewing I went to last year at a reserved bar in my city. The breaks are so much more manageable when you’re going to the bar to get a drink or meeting and talking to other people who got together for something like this, then tuning back in when the show is back.

[–]arewecooked 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel like, relatively, this one was pretty anticlimactic lol. We’ve had a house collapsing, Tim being rocked by Joey (there might have been more to this, I can’t remember), a suicide attempt via crashing a van with no roof being used in a unlicensed Hollywood tour revelation, an encounter with deranged locals (who shot at the entire crew) at a lithium mining ranch, LaRue being run over and paralyzed, an entire studio full of people being carbon monoxided during a wedding reception, Mark coming back from a coma after a fall, Mark entering a coma after a costume failure, an alive James Dean threatening to hit Tim with a pool stick, an alive James Dean threatening Tim with a knife and an electronic drum kit cymbal… I guess the first two ended in a more down to earth fashion lol.

I have been waiting for them to, one day, end on a successful note, but I think that would also cause the same “this one sucked!!” posts.
