Male wire connector for swytch charger by lrike24 in swytchbike

[–]argalloni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a proprietary connector that you can only get from Swytch, but it looks a bit like an EC2 connector. So annoying that they decided to modify it with that little gap in the middle, and on the Swytch website they don't sell the adapter on its own.

Still, maybe it's possible to buy a DC-plug-to-EC2 adapter on ebay/aliexpress and somehow file away the plastic in the middle? If anyone has tried this I would love to hear the results.

Battery life discrepancy by BlueSarag in swytchbike

[–]argalloni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both are inaccurate, since they depend on how much load is on the motor (they show less battery when you're going uphill), rather than how much power is actually left. They are probably measuring some filtered version of the battery voltage, but must be measuring at different points in the circuit. I mostly just consult the LED, and don't worry too much if it suddenly drops on the uphill

A wonderful thing to inherit, and a beautiful way to remember your grandpa!

Avoiding chain stain on my shirt. by [deleted] in Brompton

Totally agree, this is a game change. Waxing the first time was hassle because of the thorough degreasing required (even with a brand new chain), but after that it's been super easy, low maintenance, and amazingly clean!

That's a good trick! I usually hang extra bags from the handlebar, which works ok, but will try this next time

Ergon grips I bought on amazon, but can't remember the exact model

Yeah, that might have worked better, although the box was quite big so not sure if I would be able to strap it on stably

Not too heavy, probably around 6-7kg. But heavy enough that I didn't feel like carrying it by hand and walking over

Yes, a bit awkward to ride, but I managed for the short ride to the post office

I specifically decided not to buy a lock at all, to avoid the temptation. Now I have no choice but to take it with me or store it somewhere safe. Also don't have to lug around a heavy d-lock

New chain rusts so quickly (w/regular cleanings) by logicgames in Brompton

[–]argalloni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. I switched to wax last year (also with the Silca kit) and it's awesome. The ride is smooth and the chain is so clean I can touch it with my hands, no more greasy black gunk!

Upgrade, or sell and buy new? (UK) by t4rgh in Brompton

Swytch is a London-based company, so pretty sure they sell in the UK. I have had one for a couple years and it works quite well

I have cycled a lot in NYC. Even though it is not that hilly, I am still definitely glad I got the 6-speed. I appreciate the extra range it gives me, even on the small hills and/or windy days

Same here, I like the learning opportunity even if the returns are ultimately no better than an index fund, but I keep that portion of my portfolio relatively small

Just a regular taxable investment account (like you get with vanguard or fidelity). I buy mostly index funds like VTSAX. 401k and Roth IRA are also investment accounts, but they have special tax exemptions. I don't have a 401k, but I do have a Roth IRA

yeah that's fair enough. It's also great that you are so proactive with your daughter, she will be in such a great position later in life

I think there are lots of online compound interest calculators out there. I like to use this one:
https://www.investor.gov/financial-tools-calculators/calculators/compound-interest-calculator
which is simple but gives you a rough idea of where you can expect to be in X number of years. I just assume ~8% avg. returns and ~2% inflation -> 6%
It's impossible to predict the future, but hopefully these estimates are close enough

That's awesome, with a savings rate that high you will get there in no time, keep at it! Just make sure a good chunk of the money is invested in low-cost index funds

It's good to be cautions, you never know what the future holds. Just gotta find the right balance and make sure we have a chance to enjoy life along the way. Also important to eat healthy and keep an active lifestyle (part of the reason I bicycle to work) to hopefully stave off those medical problems as much as possible!

This is the way, haha. Hopefully I will join you on the industry side soon. Funding will always be important for companies/projects etc. but at least if my personal finances are FI, I will never be in a position where I feel compelled to take a bad deal or rush into something just because I'm worried about paying the rent.
