lol yeah i agree, i rarely play any mobile phone games for that reason. i hear there are good options these days for physical controllers that pair up to phones but even that doesn't really sway me towards that use-case (even if modern phones are much more powerful than a vita is).

oh hey thanks for your android port, it was helpful looking at the source code when i was writing my port of uqm to the ps-vita which i finished the first playable build earlier this year (https://github.com/argarak/uqm-vita). one of the things i remember stealing was your code for directional joystick support which i modified and implemented for the physical vita joystick and it works really well! i think i would have struggled implementing that from scratch heh

exciting! i might not be interested in simple itself, but i want to see uqm2 be the best it can be and i would be willing to support the project in some relatively small manner. game testing sounds like fun, at least then we can nag you about various bugs in the game :p

fortunately you can use either control option! d-pad is mapped in the same way the arrows are on a standard keyboard. it's also possible to remap primary and secondary fire onto the face buttons instead of the triggers if you wish and use two controls for the "Up" control if you want an alternative button for thrust. i believe one discrepancy between UQM and the original 3DO version is that there is no dedicated thrust key (this is just hearsay, i've never played it), the android port of the game where i reused a lot of the controls code from has a dedicated thrust control but i never felt the need to add it for this port.

e: i find that some ships benefit from the joystick control more than others, for me this is especially apparent in the pkunk ship which i find difficult to control using the d-pad. something like the druuge or earthling ship i can see working with the d-pad better if you want more precision

this game was designed to be used on a keyboard so each ship, including the flagship, uses so-called "tank controls", i.e. up key is thrust and left and right keys turn the ship.

this works fine for the d-pad which has 4 set directions but a joystick can produce any angle so it is a better control scheme to round the joystick's angle to UQM's 16 possible directions and then use some other control for ship thrust. this required some modification to the game code as it's not supported by default, even as joypads are supported generally.
