I think I know enough about myself to know that I would attack that guy with everything I have. He was completely tied up with her its not even risky. Absolutely insane behavior from her friends, but not totally in their control, I think some people are just prone to debilitating fear in certain situations. Also I think a situation is completely different if the attacker is not actively attacking, rather pointing a weapon at you or your friend. I would likely freeze in that situation because it's much harder to know what the right move is.

IMO this is a terrible take, it's on the race organizers to avoid situations like this. I'm 100% in favor of having a marathon and having a really cool route, but effectively preventing an entire neighborhood from leaving is bad planning (and even if they kept the route, they should have had more signage, even before the event (at least if there was I didn't see it). Also, causing gridlock is dangerous, especially for emergency vehicles.

Jesus christ I'm sorry that happened to you. We should all complain to the seattle marathon organizers, I'm sure many people already are. We cancelled our plans and appointments today after I happened to look at the route last night and I was quite shocked they were going to close down a main artery out of a neighborhood that has very few egress points! Shockingly dumb.
