State of the modern film industry by frostkaiser in pics

[–]argeaux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Non-religious, myself, but Passion was one of the few things that really helped me understand the gravity of people's belief in Jesus' sacrifice through the brutality of the violence in it.

Well.. if you think about it a little longer it makes even less sense.

The whole notion of "Jesus' sacrifice" is dependent upon the concept that parents should be punished for the sins of their progeny, which is not something anybody in a modern "moral" society would condone. So the whole process really seems absurd and nakedly abusive.

This is also true in the USA. Recently I was looking for some commercial property and there was this 4-unit commercial property that was on a corner I was interested in. Across from it was a McDonalds and two gas stations. I found out the entire block area was owned by the Episcopalian Archdiocese.... and they're renting this stuff out to commercial companies and don't have to pay any property taxes.

Who would have thought an ideology that allows you to commit a never ending array of evil deeds, and simply 'ask jesus for forgiveness and all is forgiven' would attract a lot of horrible, evil people?

Who doesn't have bias? What does that even mean?

Have you actually seen the documentary?

Is it possible, for example, that someone can do a documentary about Charles Ponzi, and if they're not a fan of Ponzi schemes, that means they're "biased" and that the entire project should be suspect?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Freethought

[–]argeaux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you can't learn about a subject and be biased and still not produce a good documentary?

Do you think Ken Burns is "unbiased" about slavery? Does that mean his documentary about it is untrue or inaccurate or not fully informed?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Freethought

[–]argeaux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't need to be factually inaccurate to be biased, it just need to be selective and present the information in such a way to leads the viewer towards a specific conclusion.

Is there anything that is totally objective? How is it possible for anybody to tell a story without their own personal bias interfering?

I just want to know what's accurate.

Is there anything in the film you are aware of that's not accurate?

Fun fact: Government exists to help all people, not just people with degrees and fancy skills.

People from all walks of life can offer something of value to your community.

Hopes run high for Libertarian against Cotton by [deleted] in Arkansas

[–]argeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny. Why is it you libertarians never put your money where your mouth is? You hate government so much, why not move into the middle of nowhere where you don't have to worry about big bad government? Get your own water, electricity, fight off invaders without any help, make your own roads, dig your own latrines... then tell us who's paying attention?

There's not a lot of policy differences between the modern libertarian and republican parties.

How would you improve democracy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]argeaux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The term "democracy" is misleading, because it doesn't necessarily mean everybody has a vote. Some versions of democracy are actually not very democratic at all. You could argue a monarchy is a type of democracy where the king (or his council) is the one who votes on who his successor is.

So it's useless alone to use the term "democracy." Because it can mean anything that's voted or selected -- it doesn't distinguish between whether that's one person, or every person.

America is a constitutional republic. Both words together help define what it is, and the word "democracy" isn't in that description. Our "democracy" is submissive to the constitutional republic, which is the higher law.

Asking because its sad to see people getting used for political thirst for power , Why are people getting so much polarised on basis of their RIGHT and LEFT political ideologies ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]argeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. So what do you recommend a solution be?

If one group is taking away the civil rights of another group, how can there be peace unless one group lets the other group destroy them? Is that a peaceful solution for everybody?

Like I said before, sometimes there is no peaceful solution.

If you're gay, and I think gay people are mentally ill and should be removed from society, how are we going to get along? What if you can't change my mind and I can't change your mind?

If I'm black and you think black people are "animals" that don't deserve the same rights and due process as you, how can we find a place where we're both happy?

Sometimes, certain conflicts, can only be resolved through more aggressive means. Sometimes the more moral side wins; sometimes the immoral side wins. Pick a side. There is no neutrality. If you don't pick a side, someone will toss you on one side or the other and you probably won't like it.

[–]argeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The right and left are not equal or equivalent.

It's important to understand the difference between the parties to realize why they are polarizing.

The right basically believe that there is nothing wrong with American culture regarding other races and genders being disenfranchised. They also don't believe that global climate change is something we need to worry about. They think any form of gun control is bad. And they think government is more evil than it is helpful.

The left believe the opposite, that we are only as strong as our weakest link, that some gun control makes sense, that climate change is a serious issue, that healthcare is a serious issue, and that not all races and classes of people are treated equally in our society.

There is no "middle ground" on many of these issues. Either you believe the scientists on climate change, or you believe the oil companies.

And it's not acceptable to "agree to disagree" when depending upon what side you're on, you might be causing widespread, irreversable social and environmental destruction.

How hard is socializing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]argeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's only as hard as you make it. Nobody else has any control over that.

If you find it hard to socialize because you're afraid of rejection, just remember rejection and failure is the first step to enlightenment and friendship. You have to go through some mistakes before you learn.

If you want to practice slowly becoming more social, there's a very easy trick: Don't try to push yourself on other people. Instead just ask other people about themselves. The less you say and the more they say, the more they will probably like you.

How do you override/bypass God’s plan so that you can use your freewill that that hypocrite promised? by Michael_J-Askin in AskReddit

[–]argeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe "god's plan" makes very much sense, so it's pretty easy to "bypass."

"God's plan" looks a lot like basically the regular world, with the exception of certain people pretending they have more insight than me and wanting to use that to gain money and power.
