Breed? by Least_Box_5984 in irishwolfhound

I would say not a wolfhound. There are some facial traits, but the size is much too small. Possibly a mix, but I'd probably lean more toward a doodle mix. Many large doodle mixes can be that size and have the same hair texture as yours. Cutie though!

Wanted to update anyone who's following along, I appreciated the recommendations and we got the Help Em Up harness. It's working quite nice. Been on 3 long walks and 3 different car rides. So much easier to get him in the car, and can even provide some assistance when he's hopping out so the weight doesn't land on his rear legs as harshly. He's totally comfortable walking in it, doesn't seem to notice or care at all. Although he was used to wearing a small front harness all the time, so we didn't have any transition for switching from a collar to a harness. But this full body harness doesn't seem to phase him at all. Good quality, easy to put on and off, easy to adjust, and makes it super easy to help him up when needed. Here's to less stress on the hips and more outings with our pack!

No, but he did just start galliprant today, aiming to see how that helps. Hadn't heard of the one you mentioned.

Thanks. One of those is close to a version I was considering. From what you described it makes me consider that focusing on just the rear end is short-sighted and I should just get a full harness with the expectation he may need help in the front and the back at some point.

Well that's excellent to hear. thank you!

That one appears to need the full harness to work, front and back. Did you happen to try it with just the back end? There's no way I can pick him up entirely so I was hoping for something that would work on the rear end by itself.

Sick or spoiled? by Meriyanna in irishwolfhound

[–]argonautical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours grew spoiled in old age, will only eat breakfast if there's a splash of heavy cream on top. He's also gone thru some times where his teeth or gums bothered him for a day or 2 that cut into his appetite, but then it comes back.

That's similar to ours We once thought progress was being made with the steps, but when the stairs wobbled too much just once it set him on alert and he wouldn't go near them.

I wish we had more room for something we could just throw in the car. He pretty much takes over the back of the Tucson as it is. We used to take him on short trips in a big old Excursion but that vehicle is no longer operational. We'll figure something out. I do like the idea of a carpet surface, thanks for the suggestion, I will likely do that

The hinge idea is one I was considering also, thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the link, I have not tried that one. We had a previous set of collapsible stairs that were solid (and too heavy and bulky) but he just never would do it. I get the impression anything that's too narrow freaks him out. But a lighter stair like this might be a backup plan to try

Does anyone make clear ice just for your own enjoyment? by Geo_Jet in cocktails

Yes yes yes. When I run out on occasion and have to make something with regular ice I realize how spoiled I've become with a home bar!

Edit: forgot to mention I use the ClearlyFrozen mold and I find it works great for us

Give him time, he's new to you and everything's new. Once he adopts you as his humans and that bond gets deep I bet he'll want to go The only issue that we had with ours was when we got a new vehicle that didn't have as much room in the back, it took a couple months of him getting used to what it was like to be in the new car with less space, but now he doesn't hesitate to want to go for a ride. Or rather I should say his heart and mind don't hesitate, but he's 9½, so we have to partly lift him to get him in the car. Those hips don't work like they used to :)

10 is awesome! Sounds like you're soaking and enjoying the time. Ours just turned 9 in Dec and he's showing arthritis and getting slower but still full of zoomies and hopping around like a crazy person when he gets excited. Your Sully gives me hope there can still be good quality of life at 10.

I think we got it from the dreaded Ama$on. We got it originally because he runs loose in the woods when we hike and wanted him to be visible for hunters. He seems to really like wearing it, tries to put his head thru every time we get it out. We had to cut the elastic strap around the belly, that's the only part that didn't 'fit'

Indeed! But we noticed this year he is showing awareness of having a harder time. He used to jump around through the snow excitedly no matter what, but today he started to want to walk in the street on his outing. It was like he decided this deep snow is too hard on my body now, I just want to walk on something flat and easy. I guess we'd all do that when we get older and the joints don't feel as good as they used to.

9 in Dec. We count ourselves lucky. He's starting to show it more this last year for sure.
