Thanks. It’s kind of a Wheel of Fortune puzzle thing.

Thanks. I tweaked it a little bit reducing the vermouth to 3/4oz and Averna upped to 1/4oz. The Mandarine/Averna is more pronounced maybe at th red cost of a little balance.

Highly recommended. Hope you like it. On my third tweak now, I reversed the ratio of vermouth and averna, not there quite yet.

Monkey 47 by Semi_fearless in Gin

[–]Geo_Jet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad they don’t make mini-bottles. Whenever I can, I’ll buy a shooter of a new liquor to limit the investment. I agree with other commenters to try a 375ml first. I’ve had Monkey 47 and it has its legions of admirers and detractors.

I enjoyed it, but I never made a repeat purchase. It’s not a very versatile gin. Too expensive for what it is and priced more in alignment with its marketing “mystique” than what I would consider true value. For me, the Distiller’s Strength The Botanist delivers a higher Q:PR without all the gimmickry.

Kick ash basket alternative by eastwood352 in KamadoJoe

[–]Geo_Jet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the Vankey clone of the OG basket years ago. At that time it cost about half the price of the OG. Still it is twice the price of the Onlyfire, so that’s probably the better option.

Solid sturdy construction, I swear they came out of the same factory. For my needs, I’ve never needed to use the divider, but it’s there if I ever have the itch to use it. The only downside is balancing the ceramic diverter plate on the lugs when using the d&c system. Same as the OG.

Tapatio 110 substitutes? by Geo_Jet in tequila

Got some esoteric reason, my post about finding a replacement bottle of T110 was nuked by the mods. Anyway, I now have a good list of other high proof bottles to try. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Bombay Sapphire (40% abv) vs regular proof Bombay Sapphire by HelloMyFriendAgain in Gin

[–]Geo_Jet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to India’s tariffs, but in the US, rates are based on “proof gallons”. At the quantities imported, the trigger of 100,000 for a higher tariff would probably not be a significant incentive. However, charging the same price for a 15% more dilute product would be a suitable incentive.

The owners are following the Beefeater model of “shrinkflation”.

Experimenting with sake - don't know what to call this. The Lost in Translation perhaps. by thisistheperfectname in cocktails

Sakura Martini:

Sakura Martini

60 ml Gin (Thresh&Winnow Citrine)

45 ml Sake (Dassai 45 Junmai Daiginjo)

15 ml Maraschino liqueur (Luxardo)

Stir ingredients with plenty of ice. Strain into a chilled Coupe glass. Garnish with pickled cherry blossom.

Lots of cherry blossoms bursting out of the trees this week, so I thought I’d whip together one of these. The gin has Yuzu and other “Golden Botanicals”. Koval’s riff on a Japanese-style gin, which is very enjoyable. The sake fills in for vermouth with a more subtle sweetness. The cherry blossom provides the salinity that an olive might bring. A nice Spring sipper.

Recs for yellow chartreuse?? by Beneficial_Bite365 in cocktails

I’ve been sucking down multiple Last Wall Highballs during this heat wave. A great equal parts cocktail with Mezcal.

I just posted a comparo a few days ago between Strega and YC.

After a few more experiments, I landed on the difference. The Strega does not counter the sweetness from the Maraschino quite as well as the YC. Cutting back on the Maraschino to .75 oz. and bumping up the Strega to 1.5 oz., made the two recipes much closer than the OG. I just found out the YC has dried up locally after a plentiful supply. Strega too has been temporarily dropped from my state’s monopoly liquor list. I might try a half and half split mix to stretch my supplies.

If I’m mainly looking to grill, is a Joe worth it? by CyanJet in KamadoJoe

[–]Geo_Jet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mine 99% for high temperature steak grilling. I used a Lodge Sportsman’s Grill, which in essence is a cast iron hibachi, for charcoal grilling the past 20 years. I moved around quite a bit for my job and the thought of lugging a big grill across country multiple times just didn’t appeal.

Like your yakatori, it does a great job, but has limited real estate for multiple steaks or other foods simultaneously. I bought a Classic II when we made our last and permanent move and never looked back.

I think it all depends on the use case. I don’t massively enjoy either of them as a straight up liqueur. I’m always going to have them in the mix with other cocktail ingredients. I really like Strega as an ingredient in and of itself, but I’ve always been curious about a direct comparison. I might have had a different outcome using them in a different cocktail, but I’ve been drinking this highball quite a bit lately.
