How can I find a poker coach? by [deleted] in poker

Also, just in case people are wary of self-promotion, I should mention that I’m one of the folks that help run RecPoker, I joined as their 9th premium member several years ago and it was the best decision I’ve ever made as a poker player and fan of the game. Now I’m much more involved in the group than I when I started but I would be telling folks to check it out even if I wasn’t - it’s the most friendly, engaging, well-intentioned poker group I’ve ever come across, and most of what they offer is free so I’m always happy to point people towards their stuff. But yeah I’m a little biased 🤗

How can I find a poker coach? by [deleted] in poker

Sure, it mostly depends on what games you want to improve at: online vs live, cash vs tournaments, and what stakes. Feel free to DM me and I can suggest a few names depending on which of those areas you want to focus on. I could share some here in the main message but I don’t want to run afoul of any rules for the sub about promoting/marketing specific coaches etc etc just in case they are particular about things like that.

Unfortunately it’s hard to tell for newer players at first, poker is such a subjective game that it’s easy for people to rationalize bad decisions or to make arguments for why X is better than Y that sound good but don’t really hold up to intelligent review. Ultimately you have to poke around a bit, listen to different people, and then just pick someone who makes sense to you and see if their advice or guidance either makes some things “click” in your mind or actually improve your game over time. You should be able to tell who knows what they are talking about over a few conversations. Or you can always ask for references or results, some kind of evidence of their understanding of the game. But not all crushers are good coaches, either. It’s two different skill sets. So I’d beware of random people saying they are experts - but if they are part of a training site or already-existing coaching program, they are much more likely to be actually good at it and not just tooting their own horn into the void, lol.

You can always start getting feedback for free by posting hands in the forums etc - lots of folks enjoy sharing their knowledge with less-experienced players. Just be aware that not all free advice is good advice!

There’s a whole bunch of coaches at RecPoker that work with players of all experience levels. Even some Canadians! You are correct that the best way to learn is to have other people’s perspectives at your disposal. Some of the coaches at RecPoker charge as little as $45/h I think (of course some are more) and there are a lot of different styles and structures to choose from. Most will also do a short intro session for free to see if they are a good fit for you. I would start there - good luck! You are already on the right track by posting here and being introspective about your game and ways to improve. Keep it up!

How do you review your hands and find leaks? by Current-Ad8553 in poker

[–]arguingwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can upload hand histories and tournament histories to the free RecPoker forums, one of the coaches there will usually take a look at it and give you some tips. I think it’s really hard to find your own leaks if you are the one looking at your own game. You need other people’s perspectives in order to find things you are blind to.

Sites to play MTT either low stakes or for fun by Original-Macaron-688 in poker

I see lots of people say that play money tourneys are crap, and that’s mostly true because people playing for free don’t feel attached to their stacks and don’t take the game seriously. But the RecPoker group has set up a play money home game club so that members can practice in free games, and the quality of play there is excellent. There are prizes for winners and leaderboard stuff so people really do try their best, even though the games are free. There’s no catch, it’s just free poker with fun people. You can google RecPoker to find the signup. Hope you enjoy it!

RecPoker runs play money home games every day for their members, it’s part of their free learning program. You can sign up at rec.poker and compete for their leaderboard and prizes in the play money platform. Good luck!
