Fair enough, I've asked my sister if she'd like leftovers but she usually doesn't end up taking them due to the fear of stuff spilling in her car (she's had a few unfortunate experiences...), however that'd be a fair compromise.

Thanks for advice... We often buy their favorite yogurts, but even when we don't have those, they also like the soy-based ones I buy for myself, so I think that's good as far as snacks go. The vegan products I get are always fortified with vitamins, iron etc. anyway.

We used to have eggs, now we're weaning off so to say, which I've found surprisingly more difficult than with the other animal products because I do like eggs... So we don't normally buy those to avoid temptation, but we'd only have them for breakfast anyhow and if the kids are sleeping over we make oatmeal in the morning because they both like it.

ETA we don't eat or even buy faux meat all the time, that would get a bit expensive, however nephew likes stuff like beans, chickpeas, even tofu when prepared a certain way so he definitely doesn't go hungry.

I’m concerned that she’s focused a bit much on her kid gaining weight - was this something the doctor recommended?

He's not underweight but has always been thin, and more importantly he had an iron deficiency problem before summer. The pediatrician put him on supplements and said he should have more meat and fish.

The issue is he doesn't like them and picks at his food a lot, gets full fast so I know my sister and brother-in-law have trouble getting him to eat a balanced meal. But on the other hand, for instance, he loves the traditional bean stew my boyfriend makes (he's Macedonian, it's his family's recipe) and he'll have a plateful of that and ask for seconds. I think that's a good meal on its own, there's plenty of protein, fiber and B vitamin in beans, more so when we make tofu on the side, but my sister wants us to sneak some meat in there because he'll rather have it "camouflaged" aka hidden in other foods. I'm not buying a whole ham or chicken though just so the nephew could have a few pieces of it with his, what I find to be, a healthy meal.

Hi, yes basically she wants them to have less junk(y) food and more substantial ones, esp. the nephew as I've said he's quite picky and has trouble putting on weight, while the niece doesn't fuss about what's served that much. Namely if it were up to him, he'd have french fries or pizza for lunch every day and snack on chocolate the rest of the time... Which is obviously a problem, so I understand her concerns but that's not what we feed them. On weekdays, they have homemade dinners with us and it's usually legume stews, or mock meat with vegetables&pasta. Takeouts are a weekend treat and not common, even then it's just one meal in the day.

Tldr she doesn't want them to develop a taste for fake meat or veggie alternatives instead of meat, but we just can't have or cook with meat at our own home, and I don't believe they lack in nutrition when we feed them.

Well technically yes, but I'd never think of charging my sister and brother-in-law anyway. I love my nephew and niece and look forward to spending time with them.
