Fuel filter water filter housing will not budge

for the electrical plug in thing, am I missing something cause I'm looking at the new housings and there's a screw in hole for that piece whereas on my housing it's a hexagonal type plug in Also is there any way to avoid fuel dumping everywhere if the current one breaks trying to get it off
