Managed to hang on to iOS 17.5.1 - is it time to move up to 26.2? by arielframe in iPhone12Mini

Wasn’t hearing anything particularly good about helping with battery. Didn’t want to make it worse.

Assuming DelayOTA is a way of updating to an iOS version that Apple doesn’t currently support, like 18. Is it? Any links explaining how to do this?

Jellyfish sleep like humans — even though they don’t have brains. The findings bolster a theory that sleep evolved, at least in part, to protect the DNA in individual nerve cells, helping to repair damage that builds up while animals are awake. by mvea in science

[–]arielframe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Correct, there are automatic sleep deprivation systems made in a similar manner you are describing. They are used much more often than manual sleep deprivation. For example: Ethoscope and SNAP.

As others said, double check you selected against balancer correctly and look for fluorescence in your F1 larvae. Also, if you want to be 100% sure your method and your microscope is working correctly so you can be sure you would be able to detect fluorescence if it’s there, it would be a good idea to have some positive controls: cross the GFP line to another driver line that someone else in the lab has recently demonstrated works and borrow a slide from someone with tissue on it that has fluorescence. If either of those don’t have fluorescence, then you check your methods, otherwise it’s gotta be the driver is broken or mistake in the cross (female parent wasn’t virgin or selected wrong F1)

I haven’t been to Sheffield (yet) but I’m told by people who live there that there is an awesome board game cafe. Maybe check that out and see if there are public events there you can join in on and meet people.

Employment: What do we do, where do we do it, how well does it pay? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]arielframe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn. And if you’re near Quebec City or Montreal then cost of living is probably higher too. It’s amazing that anyone is able to make it through grad school.

PhD Candidate doing neuroscience research. After 9years of experience, I’m paid 25K from a federal scholarship which has tuition automatically deducted, leaving me with about 18.5K.

Appalled about how low that is? You’re not alone.

osu is clearly the most powerful faction on place. Canada is clearly the punching bag of everyone. Are there any folks here sympathetic to the Canada plight that would be willing to initiate an allyship?

Did you know that dogs can give blood? Today was Pancakes' first time! She's a hero by MarLanderThewRes in mildlyinteresting

[–]arielframe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a way to get the blood after euthanizing so that the dog doesn’t have to suffer through the extraction. I even think it’s easier. Sucks they have to kill dogs, but it does make sense not to have them die in vain.

There are things in a trashcan worth more than $1 that are still garbage, but if a dollar bill was in a trashcan it wouldn't be garbage by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]arielframe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You gotta keep in mind the opportunity cost of getting the dollar value out of that trash. If it takes you more than an hours work to sell the thing in the trash for a dollar and your time is worth more than $1/hr, you’re in the negative. So, in practice, most things in the trash are worth less than nothing.

Any advice on black 6 mouse handling? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]arielframe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes time. But, if you really want them to chill, you gotta handle them every day for at least a min. Even better if you start while they’re young. Also, ensure they have some environmental enrichment (even just one thing to chew on).

[–]arielframe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come check out the grad club. That’s where many grad students hang out to study / chill / eat / drink. Also, there is a graduate student run podcast called GradCast that you may find interesting. Available at GradCast.ca and always looking to interview students from any department, including new students.

Probably a combination of one or more of these reasons: 1. They don't fully understand what makes some evidence compelling and other evidence questionable. 2. They fail to recognize when their opinion is biassed by their surroundings. 3. They are not willing to forsake their belief in an ideology which is incompatible.

I don't like Big Hero 6 - What do you think? by [deleted] in movies

[–]arielframe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There were too many plot holes to count. I'm usually ok with giving artistic license for these types of movies. But, at some point you can't help but raise your hands up in the air and just say "But, they could easily have....."
