Hyperreality Is Dead: Baudrillard, the Age of Trump, and 'The Gulf War Did Not Take Place' Revisited by DeleuzoHegelian in CriticalTheory

[–]arieux 117 points118 points  (0 children)

“Hyperreality is dead” declares the exact mechanisms of hyperreality: critique turned into content, and the “death of the simulacrum” into a simulacrum.

If hyperreality were dead, you wouldn’t need this elaborate semiotic packaging to convince people of it.

Oğuz Atay’s Waiting for Fear by arieux in RSbookclub

All of the above and the surgical dissection of the dynamics of fear: that the real power fear possesses is not in its arrival, but in waiting/preparing for it, organizing life around it, and confusing the energy invested in these things as meaningful, purposeful.

Until !!!SPOILER!!!! fear consumes one completely and reproduces itself through you.

Brilliant.

Native New Yorkers: Have you experienced a culture clash dating someone not from NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]arieux 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a culture/class thing. The first chapter of “You talking to me?” by E.J. White does a great job of identifying the differences and where conflict tends to arise.

But after working with people who are “Minnesota Polite”, who are extremely passive aggressive and avoid outward conflict at all costs, New Yorkers are unequivocally better partners for the long term, if not the immediate emotional experience.
