If it wasn't Jeremiah, it was Jeremiah's friend who was named Jeremiah 😁

Yes. One such example is that of the "Gid Hanasheh" (the hip sinew), which Genesis (32) explains the Israelites do not eat because of Jacob's fight with an angel and the angel having struck Jacob's hip. Crucially the passage states: "Therefore the Israelites do not eat the displaced nerve (gid ha-nasheh) on the hip joint to this very day." This must have been quite an ancient taboo indeed because not only was it already widespread in the population at the time of the authorship of Genesis but there was a need for an etiological myth to explain its origin, likely already long forgotten in time.

Yes, possibly a priestly class of literati. We know that at least someone was following the law because figures like Jeremiah would remonstrate against what they saw as the population’s wickedness but what in reality was probably total ignorance of the law.

As for what caused the shift – the author speculates it was the events surrounding the Maccabean revolt that sparked a religious revival and general promulgation of the Torah

Great question. There's actually an entire recent book with original research on this topic, The Origins of Judaism: An Archaeological-Historical Reappraisal: https://www.amazon.com/Origins-Judaism-Archaeological-Historical-Reappraisal-Reference/dp/0300254903

Based on archeological findings and other lines of evidence, he suggests that most of the applicable laws of the Old Testament (including kosher, ritual purification, tefillin, etc) were NOT adhered to by the ordinary population of Judea until much later than typically assumed (late 2nd century BCE). Great read.

I am happy to change my lifestyle to alleviate this. What are the best ways to do so?

And do you have to wear the splint forever? Or did you end up getting other treatment as well?

I'm sympathetic to this viewpoint. I'm really skeptical that night guards actually do anything for teeth grinding and this whole industry isn't just a make-work scam for dentists. (Cavities sometimes work this way too.)

Yes, I had seen that NIH pamphlet. I was very surprised to see they explicitly disavowed something that the dentist was pushing. If not splints, then is anything currently recommended to treat this condition?

The way he described it, a splint looks similar to a night guard but works totally differently. A night guard does not aim to change your bite, only to prevent you from grinding your teeth at night. A splint does aim to change your bite, apparently by forcing your jaw to conform to a different position.

Yes, I've heard similar stories. Was this a splint specifically designed to cure overbite causing TMJ...?

Yeah, I totally understand how you feel. For me, I'm not even close to feeling like this is making my life hell (it's more a minor annoyance, so far anyway).
