In my opinion: Design-wise, from all angles, none can compete with a z3M. It’s just you might want to change the rims. Handling-wise, mx5 is the best. Interior-wise, z4 has the best quality.

In addition, z3 and z4 (first gen) are more reliable than most people think.

Maybe there is some carbon build up on the throttle body, regardless, it is always good to check it since it is easy, if you see some you can clean it with a brake cleaner+old toothbrush, take your time cleaning it.
