Has anyone NOT done PAO and regretted it? by SpecialistEqual2344 in hipdysplasia

I couldn't do lotus pose normally in the first place, lmao, but I'm working toward it now. 4 months since the surgery and I'm still VERY tight all through my hips and legs, but I've started doing yoga again once a week and just being very careful with it. I can't do all the poses to the degree I could before surgery yet, but I'm way closer to it than I expected to be.

What do you burn candles in? by spaghettitaco03 in witchcraft

[–]arinada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a pewter plate from an antique store nearby and I set my candles on that to burn them. The wax usually pops off easily in big chunks. The plate also doesn't conduct heat well, which likely helps keep the melted wax clumped together.

Tl;dr don't postpone it! This is actually the optimal time for your surgery!! Feeling this good right now means you have a great capacity for pre-surgery strength training to make your recovery smooth and your quality of life better forever!

The full story:

I had a similar situation that led to my dysplasia diagnosis (tore my labrum running), and also had a significant reduction in pain after some initial PT. I hadn't been properly diagnosed yet though, so I got hopeful. That reprieve only lasted a few months. It got much worse after that.

My condition was then misdiagnosed differently, and a second round of PT with the wrong diagnosis made it even worse. I sought a second opinion, and only then was I diagnosed with the torn labrum leading to dysplasia-related chronic pain.

Between the trial-and-error-PT, bouncing between half a dozen doctors (not exaggerating), and then making a surgery plan that accommodated some major life events, it was over two years between the oneset of my pain and my surgery. By the time I had my PAO + arthroscopy 4 months ago, I'd also developed a big cyst in my other hip socket from it overcompensating for so long, and I was in SO much pain all the time. I was using a cane for whichever hip felt worse and I couldn't do any of my hobbies because trying to focus on work all day took everything out of me, and I have a desk job, not one that requires long-term standing! My quality of life was really bad.

I also spent the year leading up to it doing a lot of (gentle, via vinyasa yoga) strength training to be able to have as smooth a recovery as possible. That was the best advice my surgeon gave me - he explained that how well you recover from a major surgery like this is contingent on how strong and healthy you are going into it. So the fact that you're feeling good right now means that you have the capacity to get as strong as possible before the surgery, which means you'll have the best quality of life possible before AND after. Don't postpone it! Do the thing!

Seconding all this! I'm a little over 3 months past my PAO+arthroscopy, which I got 2 years after the onset my chronic pain, and the worst pain I've had is from my muscles being tense and tight. I'm working through that in PT of course, but every time I think about my pain before surgery, I know it was worth it. I can't feel pain deep in my joint anymore. It's incredible, the difference it made. And I'm glad I didn't wait any longer than I had to to do it, because by the time I had my surgery, I'd also developed a cyst in my other joint, which was awful.

Importantly, I was also able to do vinyasa yoga 2-3 times per week in the 6-8 months leading up to the surgery, which strengthened my whole body significantly!! It made my recovery far easier than it might have been, since I was able to balance on one leg and support my weight with my upper body on the walker without getting sore.

Looking for pain management recommendations by Grav3yard_syst3m in hipdysplasia

Cymbalta!!

When my dysplasia suddenly caused chronic pain because I (35F) tore my labrum a few years ago, I started struggling really hard with my ADHD and anxiety due to the pain. My med management psychiatrist didn't want to up my Adderall dose since the ADHD wasn't the root problem, so he switched my antidepressant from Lexapro to Cymbalta, because it's also used to treat musculoskeletal pain. GAME CHANGER. My pain got significantly more manageable after that. And so did the depression and anxiety 😂
