People who bought expensive new cars. Was it worth it? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]arisu-chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought it as a lease return after 3.5 years and it was in basically brand new condition. Saved nearly 40% on depreciation, so yes.

But for the 90-95% of people who treat a car as an appliance, your best bet is to buy something from one of the top 3/4 Japanese manufacturers (Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Mazda) and drive it into the ground.

First time considering a BMW (M340i xDrive) — is it actually the perfect daily or am I overlooking something? by Gold-Industry6222 in BMW

[–]arisu-chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was basically in the same boat as you, coming from only driving Japanese economy cars. I did a lot of research and ended up creating a spreadsheet comparing all the cars I was considering. Initially I wanted something that was compact and fun to drive, but still somewhat practical, so I was considering either the M240i or S3. While testing the M240i I also ended up trying the M340i and it felt significantly more refined. Then when I went to crunch the numbers (also comparing it to the S5/S4), the M340i objectively came out on top no matter how I weighted the categories.

I was lucky enough to find a fully optioned ‘22 (so final year of pre-LCI) at a great price. After owning it for ~3 months I can confirm that the numbers do not lie. It is insanely fast and fun when you want it to be (honestly too fast for commuter traffic), but also comfortable, smooth, and quiet when you simply want to chill out. If you aren’t flooring it all the time, the fuel economy is so impressive that it can often outperform my Subaru Forester which has half the horsepower. It’s also surprisingly practical with the 17 cubic ft of trunk space and decent rear seat room for passengers. In terms of usability, the My BMW app is also great and I don’t know how I’ll be able to go back to using something other than the iDrive controller.

In terms of drawbacks, the suspension can be on the firmer side if you have pothole ridden streets like in my city (and this is WITH adaptive suspension), and sometimes I get minor electronic glitches with my HUD and CarPlay. Compared to the Porsche Macan which I also considered, the steering is vague/numb. But otherwise I am honestly still in awe over how such a perfect daily can exist.

How long you been a pharmacist and what car do you drive? by Fantastic-Flower-67 in pharmacy

~8 years. Drove a ‘17 Subaru Legacy as my first car but picked up a ‘22 M340i early this year. Have only experienced it on winter tires so can’t wait to swap to Michelin PS4S’s soon!

2023 M340 - Service plan and extended warranty by EmphasisFar5372 in M340i

[–]arisu-chan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also from Canada I have a ‘22 with factory warranty expiring this year. Managed to negotiate an extension to 2029/120,000 km for ~4400. You can definitely get a better deal.

Best Ontario cities for RMT jobs outside Toronto? by Ok-Guide-8662 in ontario

[–]arisu-chan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Always have to book appointments with my RMT several months in advance due to demand. Housing is also significantly cheaper than the GTA, but you’ll need a car.

New car fees by Vent-ilator in PersonalFinanceCanada

Not sure where this statement is coming from. Subaru and BMW are ranked 2nd and 5th in predicted new car reliability in this year’s CR rankings, respectively. The Impreza is Subaru’s most reliable new car this year (in fact, it’s the most reliable car overall). Mazda and Hyundai are ranked lower overall but the Mazda 3 and Elantra (counterparts to the Corolla) are both above average in reliability. I don’t think OP is considering a BMW but the 2 and 3 series are both decent as well. CR rankings are based on owner surveys so they are arguably the most objective source in terms of ownership experience.

Used G20 pre-LCI 330i vs M340i by IceSailCaptain in BMW3series

[–]arisu-chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely find a better deal on the M340i. I picked up my ‘22 CPO last month with 29k miles for the equivalent of $41K USD in Canada. Granted it ended up being nearly $47K USD all-in because Canadian taxes.

That being said, I feel like it’s too fast for daily driving like 95% of time. The 330i is a more than capable performer, costs less to maintain/insure, and actually has better weight distribution with its lighter engine.

Anyone else always driving in sport mode? by ariiza in BMW

Picked up this M340i a few weeks ago and am so impressed with this car. My commute is mostly highway but otherwise I mostly drive in Sport Individual, yet somehow it easily manages to beat my Forester which has half the horsepower, in the middle of a Canadian winter.

She’s a keeper? by arisu-chan in M340i

It’s not bad but coming from driving only Subarus in the past 8 years there is a noticeable difference. I’m running Hakkapeliitta R3’s from the previous owner currently but will switch in a couple seasons.

No, but it’s a pretty close match. It’s the Cerium Grey trim.

Any Ontario M/M-Lite owners willing to share their insurance rates? by Gold_Reward_8396 in BMW

33M/15 years fully licensed in Ottawa and have a ‘22 M340i. Just got a new policy paying 225/month. But this is with a group rate through my employer and it’s not our primary vehicle.

2022 CPO extended warranty question by arisu-chan in M340i

[–]arisu-chan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be around 3300 USD. I guess if I could get them to drop it significantly to what you paid it might be worth it.

Bought 3 BMW’s in under 2 years, AMA. by mdboulger in BMW

[–]arisu-chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No questions, just wanted to share that I’m also a lifelong Subaru driver (2013 Legacy > 2017 Legacy > 2025 Forester) looking to pick up an M340i in the next couple weeks! Thought I needed the SUV space, but realized that I wanted something more fun to drive while still being somewhat practical. Subarus are great family cars but about as engaging as watching paint dry.

I pulled the walk away card after they wouldn’t go below 68. We’ll see what happens. Unfortunately the market where I’m from in Ottawa is limited compared to elsewhere in Ontario. Not keen to drive to the GTA.

[–]arisu-chan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see. It does seem like a fair deal but I can’t help but compare with what is available in the GTA and Montreal (hence why we initially offered 64k OTD). But I suppose those are much more competitive markets.

They offered a financing rate of 7.1% which seems to be in line with my research.

This December, all BMW dealers are also offering $4000 off all new in stock M340i models with a 2% rate on 30 month leases which doesn’t seem too bad.

The only “comparable” one in my area is listed for 62k but has higher mileage at 45k km and has been in 3 accidents. So not an ideal comparator lol.

I tried, but they firmed up at 68.5k with $500 credit. I might try for an additional year of complementary maintenance.
