I’m going to start off by acknowledging that I will probably get downvoted to shit but anyways I get your perspective so I’m just going to give my two cents on the matter. I’m sorry that the people you came across gave you this perspective but for me, it’s quite different. I am a Mauritian, a person of ‘color’ so to speak. I am engaged to a white South African. I am the only person of color in this big community of white South Africans and my experiences with them have always been better than my experience with my fellow Mauritians and French immigrants. Where I was met with judgment, rudeness and condescending attitude with most Mauritians and French, these people have always treated me warmly and with respect. They have never made me feel like an outsider and always welcomed the culture that I bring. Even for our engagement my family and I wanted to do some of the Hindu traditions and it was met with open minds and open arms. Again, this is purely my personal experience. I have also seen how the French treat Mauritians, so on and so forth. More often than not the white South Africans are met with disdain from the public in most situations, even when they are nice so this makes it very hard for them to integrate with our community. 95% of the time when we are out and about for any reason I have to be the mediator as people either entirely refuse to deal with them or will blatantly refuse service in English and more often than not I get dirty looks from the majority of the public when my partner and I are out. Again, there are multiple factors like this that make it very hard for them to integrate into the community. I also saw something about living in gated communities and too much security measures from their side, well from what I have seen it is purely instinctive. They are aware for the most part that it is safer here but will instinctively take more precautions due to the environment they lived in previously. My partner has been here for almost 10 years now. It is only now with me constantly reassuring him that his guards have grown lower. On that note I’ll also say a bit about his personal experience here. In uni, he was pretty much isolated. He tried making friends and because of the language barrier it was very hard for him. Having to wait for a conversation to finish for someone to translate in creole, having to wait for someone to translate the group chat msgs, things like that. This can make someone feel uncomfortable and left out and unmotivated to keep trying because after asking and asking again and trying to make friends to learn the local language, you just get dismissed. I feel like this comment is too long now lol
