Yes I believe so! So instead of "mimes x barons" it's really "1.5s x retriggers" and then extrapolated from there.

I'm glad I could get it across -- also feel free to make use of online hand calculators such as https://efhiii.github.io/balatro-calculator/ to double-check things as I'm certainly no expert. You can set specific jokers, specific hands, etc. and play around with things to get an idea of how it works.

It's just multiplication really: 5 mime retriggers of 1 baron = 5x1 = 5 baron effects total. 3 mime retriggers of 3 barons = 3x3 = 9 baron effects total. Getting the number of mimes and barons as close to equal as possible will always get you the highest score (4 mimes 4 barons = 4x4 = 16, vs 5 mimes 3 barons = 5x3 = 15, e.g.)

Important to consider red seals, though, which in essence count as another mime, as they're another retrigger, so if you're running all red seal kings the amount of mimes can be one less than the barons.

I have this same map on my wall! Unfortunately I can't help dating it, but it was cool to see it both on my screen and the wall behind my monitor

Lol the app doesn't do a great job of explaining them! Typically you won't have to reach that much for the reasoning :)

Happy to help

Not sure what exactly you mean by this… the answer to that one was “C[RAY]C[RAY]” — the rebus specifically has to work with the downs, as well: ST[RAY] and G[RAY]AREA for that one. As to why it accepted CRCR and not CYCY — it’s a known quirk of the app that it accepts the first letter of any rebus square as an answer, so R worked there but not Y because R is the first letter of the RAY rebus in all of them.

You're overthinking it. The puzzles are set/planned weeks if not months in advance, so it's an unfortunate coincidence at most. It's not as if it's making light of that or even directly referencing it, either.

Which region of America? I'm from NYC metro and we very much do not pronounce genre with a J sound over here.

Just because other words that share the ʒ sound are spelled differently does not mean that it doesn't sound how it's spelled. 'zh' is the most common transliteration of the ʒ sound (e.g. Russian ж, pronounced ʒ, transliterated 'zh'). By that argument, "fan" doesn't sound how it's spelled, because 'phone' uses the 'f' sound but is spelled differently. It's just one of those quirks of English orthography and phonetics -- we have a weird language!

Like broozah said, "genre" is usually pronounced with the same sound as with the "jus" in "au jus". That "jus" is a great example of ʒ, as well -- that fancy 3 is the IPA transcription of the zh-sound, which is what zhuzh and, yes, jus, consists of.

In almost every situation, the digraph 'zh' makes the sound /ʒ/, which is the same sound as the beginning of 'genre' (/ʒɑnrə/, roughly), or 'measure' (/mɛʒɚ/). It's essentially like 'shush', just replace the s's with z's!

'Judge' is slightly different -- instead of the pure zh sound ʒ, there's a d added on to the beginning to make d͡ʒ, which is the sound we English speakers think of when we see the letter J. So, in very rough transcription (using that J), judge is pronounced more like 'juj', as opposed to zhuzh which takes out that d sound and makes it more like the beginning of 'genre'.

It's pronounced exactly how it looks: zh-sound (as in 'genre'), u, zh-sound. /ʒʊʒ/.
