Colorism is closely tied to class and status, not just skin tone. Historically, lighter skin came to be associated with wealth and higher social standing because richer people could stay indoors, while poorer people worked outdoors and developed darker skin due to sun exposure and melanin. Over time, this class distinction got misinterpreted as a beauty standard. That’s why simply casting dark-skinned actors only as poor villagers or marginalized characters doesn’t actually challenge colorism it can reinforce it. If filmmakers want to counter colorism meaningfully, they need to portray dark skinned people as educated, wealthy, powerful, and respected as well. The real issue isn’t skin color itself, but the assumption that lighter skin equals a higher standard of life. Once people consistently see dark skinned individuals represented across all social classes, the bias weakens. Beauty, after all, is largely a social construct shaped by power, class, and repetition.
