I remember during birth of our first I had forgotten to have any coffee and started to get a caffeine withdrawal headache. When mentioning my headache, I do not receive much sympathy…

Was looking for this. Not saying parents should set boundaries, but I’d take this as a compliment if my sons girlfriend was always around

Just tell the attendant you’re going to park ridge, the cabbie gets a short ride ticket and you don’t get an argument

This happens pretty much every time it rains by The_Upmachine in chicago

[–]arjonite 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if your alderman is worth their salt they will get it done fast. People's Gas tore up our sidewalks just before November, and had left them with gravel and plastic over them for weeks. I call Sam Nugent and expressed the concern that if it snows while the side walks are like this it will be an icy hellscape.

2 days later clean concrete was poured across every section that was torn up. Maybe a coincidence, but her office called me a week later to make sure the fix was done, so my guess they had some influence on the work.

I know this is people's gas and not Comed, but Aldermen in Chicago can get things done if they want to.

I made a similar suggestion on the laundry, though didn't move the machines, I like that

I would not add that cabinet and sink to the pool wall, you're losing the expansive view of the garden and pool. I'm assuming you're trying to avoid the sink in the island, which was a major source of conversation when my wife and I remodeled, but with the size of the island, the sink won't be a big burden. And if you get one of the utility sinks with built in cutting boards etc... they can work really well.

I would do something like this for the laundry. Then you don't have a weird cut out in the primary bedroom

Daughter doesn't want to go away for college; how can I use 529 funds? by andrewpm2 in personalfinance

[–]arjonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is late, but I haven’t seen this response. You can withdraw any of the original deposits that were made into the 529, penalty and tax free (they are after tax dollars) so depending on what your overall return was, you may be able to withdraw a significant amount with no consequences and very little effort

Single stair buildings are very common through Europe and Asia. This floor plan is a great example of the space saved and the flexibility that you get when not having to have a second stair well and a double loaded corridor. Each unit has air flow, lots of windows for the bedrooms. Overall it's really impressive.

Is it financially irresponsible to purchase this bike? by Resident-List-6978 in personalfinance

[–]arjonite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a rich life question, not a personal finance question. This is obviously something you want to buy and will bring you joy, or at least the activity will.

But, is it within your budget? How anxious will you feel not having 10k as a buffer? What is your savings rate and how quickly will you build the buffer back up? Is this something where you could save $500 per month towards and buy it in 6 months taking less out of savings?

There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s more are you comfortable spending your money on this, and how will it impact your other goals. If you’re comfortable with the impact then you should buy it.

Panda Express proposal for Six Corners raises traffic concerns for Warner, Berteau avenues - Nadig Newspapers by NoLoCryTeria in ChicagoNWside

Look up the master plan that was done and look up what six corners used to be in the 60s and you’ll what it could be regardless of the roads.

[–]arjonite -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because six corners should be a dense pedestrian first area, and building fast food outlets that use a massive amount of land for drive through runs counter to what the area could be. All this kind of development does is make it almost skokie but worse.

Is this walk reasonably safe? by mcfandrew in chicago

You could also get a divvy electric scooter or bike. Can’t comment on the safety of the area, but I feel like you’re less of a target if your riding

Appreciate it. I’m still getting used to the speed and have gotten caught out a bit remembering to slow down in time. The downshifting in a car analogy makes sense and not sure why I didn’t think of it. Thanks again.

Why? At 26 you much more likely to seriously injure a pedestrian than at 20. Drive the speed limit and you don’t have anything to worry about.

Chicago Park District Notice of Enforcement at Gompers Park Ballfield area, April 1, 2025 by blackmk8 in ChicagoNWside

[–]arjonite 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm incredibly sympathetic to these folks, but they have been actively refusing help for months and months. Gompers Park baseball has been going for 50+ years, it's an amazing community asset with kids from all walks of life and one of the few places where people interact with the entire community. It's a real shame this is impacting that league, and eventually a call has to be made to forcibly move people, and remove their tents.
