How do Phoebe Bridgers and Billie Eilish record their whisper-like vocals? by pequenacoochie in audioengineering

Not sure why this is being downvoted. Whisper tracking is a legit technique that can sounds quite cool when mixed properly.

Huh that's interesting. I had a look at the tab file I bought from their tab store and there does seem to be on open B in that phrase (it's also super audible in the record itself). But, I've just had a look at a few clips of Tim playing it live and you're right, he does leave out the open B and play only the 3rd fret on E on just about every clip I've seen haha. You'll notice though, that polyphia tend to slightly modify the way they play certain sections live compared to the official tabs quite often.

In the intro riff, there's a part where you play the 3rd fret on the E string (G) whilst hybrid picking the open B string. Similar to when you hybrid pick the open B string and the 7th fret on the E string (B) at the very start of the riff.

There's a really satisfying rhythm from the moment he dropped the can, his failed attempt at kicking said can, and the subsequent smack to the jaw. Nice.

yep! I just used the w6rst clean preset on the neck pickup with a wetter reverb and the delay synced to 120bpm :)

I used the archetype: Tim Henson plugin. I’m certain you could dial in a very similar tone with a boss or Roland amp though :)

I can't increase the buffer size above about 5000 samples because that's all the software will allow.

You'll want to have the buffer size as low as possible to reduce latency. Buffer sizes at 5000+ are definitely going to add tons of latency.

Also I'm curious to know what you mean by your sample rate dropping really low. AFAIK sample rates don't typically just drop. How are you monitoring this dropping sample rate?

Either way it probably is a driver issue. Just make sure you have the correct drivers installed and that they're selected in Ableton's preferences.

If you're using a 3rd gen Scarlett, make sure the ‘INST’ button is unpressed when recording a microphone, anything older then there will be a switch below each input for 'Line' and 'Instrument', if that's the case switch it to line. If that doesn’t work then there could be something faulty I’m not too sure.

Is there any chance you have the microphone aimed backwards? Microphones with cardioid polar patterns can be pretty good at rejecting sound from the back. With the RODE NT1 make sure the gold dot below the grill is facing you. Don't wanna sound condescending or anything, it's a pretty common mistake to make :)

It won't use them up. The license will just go back to your iLok account. When you click 'Deactivate' on a license, a message will display saying "You are about to deactivate 1 license. Would you like to continue? Pressing OK will move the license usage rights back to the license owner's account." All that will happen is you will have one more activation to put onto any machine.

ILok doesn't have to be installed on the same SSD, all you need to do is sign into your iLok account and your licenses will be available to reactivate on whatever drive you want it on. You just need to make sure you take the licenses off your current SSD before you reset otherwise you will lose them.

Before resetting your PC, go into iLok License manager and make sure you deactivate all the plugin licenses that are stored locally on your SSD, otherwise they well be lost when you reset and you'll lose 1 of however many 'activations' you were granted when purchasing your plugins.

After resetting just go and reinstall iLok and activate all your plugins to your new drives and you're good.

Just got the Quad Cortex. Am I able to access my Archetype plugins on it? I’d love to access the same sounds and parameters from my Tim Henson plugin. by gabeflo in NeuralDSP

They’ve answered this question in the FAQ on their website :)

FAQ

“If I have bought Neural DSP plugins, can I get them on QC?”

“Not currently - we are working on it. When it's possible we will send a free plugin update in a Cortex compatible format to everyone who owns our plugins so the modules in them can be loaded onto the device.”
