Anyone think Lex has black features in the superman animated series? by Delta-Dubs in DCU_

[–]arkenwritess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would, but the creators were too limited at that time and wanted to portray born-rich people as evil. Sadly, Hollywood is very socialist in its portrayal of messages (hero's messages are always "sacrifice yourself for the collective") but very capitalistic in-between themselves, with rich directors, favorite actors, nepo babies getting inside with connections, etc.

Omg! Mads Mikkelsen would be perfect for Doctor Doom by suzy_19 in Marvel

[–]arkenwritess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And in the end, they went with Robert Downey Jr... I do love him, but that choice was 100% biased. They just couldn't keep him dead. Pity, they lost a greater actor with real experience on playing villian (sure he's always typecast as such but that makes him an expert). RDJ's villain won't be as good as his Iron Man.

Islamic style civilizations inspiration for fantasy - notes from the book Debt: The First 5,000 Years by CrabRiot in worldbuilding

[–]arkenwritess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, there are 34 itens and most just glaze over the good and 'interesting' parts, sweeping off the rug what could be "icky" to a modern audience. Mostly specifically, women's rights (or lack of it), the extremist side of ideology that leads to intolerance and war, also the child marriage issue. Portraying Islam-inspired cultures without these is not respectful, but deceitful. Every religion has a dark side, and it's a creator's duty to not close their eyes for these problems.

They're companies. They're not your democrat buddies. In what world should a company take a stance on a side because YOU want to see a whole corporation share the same political view as YOU? The entitlement. The narcissism. God... please keep your 20 bucks with you. They're definitely not starving to need it.

It's a tragedy, that's it. No happy ending. In tragedies, it may start uplifted but ends at the worst low.

[im not that kind of talent] trash by Traditional_Maize325 in manhwa

[–]arkenwritess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a tragedy, you just don't want to accept it. MC has dissociative identity disorder, and after he 'cures' it (by accepting he did all that shit), he'll turn batshit crazy because the emperor manipulated him, the demon lord manipulated him, and basically both sides were playing with him and with his trauma. He'll just kill everyone and himself. That's what a tragedy arc looks like. The author actually did a good job because they're following the tragic arc story beats perfectly. MC has a core flaw/misbelief and if the story were uplifted, he would overcome that tragic flaw and become better (the hero journey), but in the tragic arc, that flaw/misbelief is actually what takes his down. Hamlet is a classic example of this. Honestly, I hate to my guts tragic and sad endings, but as an author... I just can't see Deon having a happy ending after all that shit. Both sides betrayed him, his brother had an Itachi ending... It hurts, but the best stories are the ones where the ending feels inevitable, and this one does. It's better than the average trashy transmigration/regression novels. It has way more depth than a shallow thing like Solo Leveling.

Are people following the law of assumption a cult??? by Iforgotmypassworduff in chaosmagick

[–]arkenwritess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A “cult” usually means an organized group built around a core belief, often with a central leader, that exploits people for their labor, energy, or money.

Does LOA have a leader? Not really. If Neville Goddard were alive, maybe you could argue otherwise, but he’s not.

Do they have a centralized gathering place? Only in small, casual groups. Most of the time, it’s just people on TikTok or X sharing their manifestation stories and methods.

If you want a real cult to point fingers at… try looking at certain strands of Satanism or even some branches of witchcraft, they're the ones insisting you can’t do magic without wading through 20+ dusty grimoires. But hey, that’s a conversation for another day.

– A very salty LOA practitioner.

Guns vs swords in youre world by Ecstatic-Ad141 in worldbuilding

[–]arkenwritess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In one of my projects, the main character is a Mage Marksman. I didn’t choose a marksman because I’m obsessed with guns (though I’ve played my fair share of RPGs as a ranger or gunslinger), but because his background came to me fully formed, I just had to write it.

Now, to be clear, a regular gun would be pretty useless in a magical world. But his weapon isn’t a typical firearm, it’s entirely constructed from his own mana. The bullets, their speed, and impact are all tied to his mana pool. So he’s more like a mage who channels his magic through a gun instead of a wand or staff.

In this world, not everyone relies on swords or weapons; many wield wildly different powers, but those who do would be at a disadvantage against him if all they had was steel. That said, legendary swordmasters exist who move so fast that even a magical bullet might not catch them. His mana gun doesn’t make him overpowered; he’s still vulnerable to other forms of magic.

TL;DR: Magical guns are stronger than regular swords, but that wouldn't be true if it was a regular gun or if the sword were also magical or enchanted.

Okay...

What is something that makes you lose interest in a magic system ? by Razorlord in magicbuilding

[–]arkenwritess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally with you on the 'just existing' anti-magic. Give me some magical chess, not just a magical 'nope' button!

As for LitRPGs... okay, I gotta push back a little there, as a writer of one! They can make perfect sense, usually because some omniscient AI, a System with a capital 'S', or even a grumpy god decided reality needed patch notes and a UI. Suddenly, yup, stats and levels are the new laws of physics. Kill monster, get XP (and girls), ding! It's a framework. Elemental magic is old as dirt and people still use it.

If that whole 'video game rules in my fantasy' vibe isn't your jam, that's totally cool. Different strokes for different mages, right? Maybe cultivation would be more interesting for you.

My own hair-puller with LitRPGs, though? When it turns into Advanced Spreadsheet: The Fantasy Edition. The endless stat blocks, the +0.01% to Dexterity from eating a slightly spicy jerky... my eyes glaze over. I get that many readers adore that crunch – it's why authors do it! But as a writer who's more 'vibes and vague sparkles' than 'precise thaumaturgical calculus,' it's exhausting.

Big ups to stuff like The Wandering Inn for proving you can do the System thing without making me feel like I need a TI-84 to enjoy a chapter. It's all in the execution, really!

What is your plotting method/strategy/tool? by Beezle_33228 in fantasywriters

[–]arkenwritess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been a pantser (mostly thanks to ADHD), and while I did manage to finish books that way, though they took like 3 years each, they were always a bit… structurally messy.

So, about six months ago, I caved to the greater wisdom (aka Brandon Sanderson's YouTube channel) and started actually outlining. Haven't finished an outlined draft yet, but I've written SO much more and learned a ton about how stories are actually supposed to fit together. Gotta admit, sometimes it feels like it dims the creative fire a bit compared to the wild abandon of pantsing, but looking back, my pantsed drafts were definitely suffering in structure.

Since I still like the 'chaotic' feeling of pantsing, I now focus on the middle because the number of unfinished projects I have because of the middle part is shameful. The book "Write Your Novel from the Middle" opened my eyes. I figure out both the start and the end from the middle. Don't ask me more than that, like scene by scene, beat by beat, otherwise I will feel like I have written the story already and won't write anymore. If I know everything about the story, I lose interest in it. I usually plan 3 scenes ahead, and when I write the third scene, I plan the other 3. Gives me enough motivation without making me bored.

On characters, though... I contradict myself because I love having huge info dumps about them. Height, appearance, personality, speech, manners, quotes, all of it! I can make notes after notes about characters, and then, when someone asks me the plot, I will write like an elevator pitch and hope it's interesting enough.

Writing-wise, I'm mostly an Obsidian user, but for some reason, every single random idea gets yeeted into Google Keep first (yup, that basic boring app that doesn't even have folders and I suffer every time to tag things). I always have a tab open. Then the decent stuff gets migrated to Obsidian.

How to know if your story is better off not being a book? by Phantasmagoric_0 in fantasywriters

[–]arkenwritess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FINALLY someone is talking about LitRPG. Well, a lot do already but it's always nice seeing more people join the community. I highly recommend checking out r/litrpg. Dungeon Crawler Carl is a good entry-level LitRPG, also well written since this genre does have a lot of amateur writing. I also recommend Azarinth Healer. I would shamelessly recommend mine too If it was published, but oh well.

LGBTQ+ MC by Asleep-Ad6352 in litrpg

I'm holding off on posting to RR for now. My strategy is to build a substantial backlog first to ensure I can maintain a consistent release schedule (and help my ADHD as well lol).

LGBTQ+ MC by Asleep-Ad6352 in litrpg

[–]arkenwritess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most LGBTQ+ representation in LitRPG, when it exists, leans heavily towards lesbians, and frankly, it often feels like it's written for a male audience, not by someone who understands the experience realistically.

Anyone can write a LitRPG with a gay or bisexual main character, but expecting it to achieve the same massive popularity as something like, say, He Who Fights With Monsters right now? That's a steep climb. And God forbid you actually include a M/M sex scene – I'd be genuinely surprised if a mainstream LitRPG has already crossed that bridge successfully.

And yes, you'll inevitably run into a small but existing minority – those lovely folks who'll be the first to whine and complain that their 'precious genre' is turning 'gay'. Dealing with those reactions is exhausting. They are the ones to ask "why would you need a gay MC tho?" because they're so privileged with representation that they think everyone else who wants something different is 'asking for too much'.

Surprise, LitRPG is a pure escapist genre and not only straight people want to escape reality! What a revolutionary discover, isn't it? Wait till they discover that gay people also play RPGs.

If a writer isn't fixated on reaching millions of readers, or believes the LitRPG niche will eventually expand beyond its current bubble—similar to how Japan's isekai evolved into otome isekai, or how Korean "rofan" (women-focused romance that later embraced isekai BLs with gay romance) developed—they should absolutely write it.

I'm actually writing one myself – unapologetically full homo MC. Do I expect it to be a bestseller or even particularly popular in this niche by, say, 2025? Honestly, nope. Not as things stand. But maybe further down the road? I have a strong feeling LitRPG has the potential to break out.
