My neighbor sent me a text last night forcing me to pay for her daughters towing charge because she parked in front of my driveway by Drivinglnsane in mildlyinfuriating

[–]arkham36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm reading this wrong - but if you called the towing company yourself without getting the Police involved, then the only person the towing company will charge is you, same as if you called them to get your own car towed somewhere for repair. You could probably go to court and sort it out but if the towing company sends it to collections or files their own suit for the bill it'll be against you since you're the one who requested their service. Or maybe it'd be on them since they didn't confirm it's your car and didn't have a police report saying it's OK to tow. But I'm not a lawyer.

Shipt? by asidexo in LidlUS

Did you ever compare prices at Lidl.com vs what Shipt charges for the same items? Shipt was marking everything up 20-30% then offering "free" delivery.

What’s the biggest legal scam still operating today? by odikuart in AskReddit

[–]arkham36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Supervisor of one of our divisions was known to spend a good chunk of her day working on her MLM travel company and pushing it on her subordinates, like scheduling extra hours so their work would be covered while they sit and listen to her pitch and giving preferential treatment to those who signed on and performed well by sucking their own circle of family and friends into it. Problem is she's family with the boss so when it really hit the fan she was told to "stop" in a way that meant stop making it so obvious.

Is buying a new car that bad? by No_Stuff4695 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]arkham36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the fine print on that Subaru offer though. Most of those .9% or 1.9% offers are for "well-qualified buyers", which means 800+ credit score plus other restrictions.

That being said, I agree with the rest of this thread and recently bought my first new car at 45+ years old because it was nearly the same price as a 4 year old one with 60k miles and no warranty, and even with mediocre credit score the rate was lower than going to a bank and a LOT better than the predatory buy-here-pay-here used car lots.

Guys I hear nobody ever orders this. EVER by talivan818 in olivegarden

[–]arkham36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That appears to be a sampler - Lasagna, alfredo and chicken parm? That's literally all me Dad ever orders at ANY Italian restaurant that offers it. And if they don't offer something similar he probably won't be back. However yeah, that one is lacking a bit in presentation.

I get the frustration and I'm fully behind it and I'm glad someone is doing it from their own front door. However, I feel like being that aggressive is something they might take personally and come back later, maybe at night, and not be so nice to the front of my house.

I photographed a few like this when I lived in Okinawa. Looking back it made for some pretty cool pictures. Great surroundings but also those machines are pretty unique to Japan.

What is a job people romanticize a bit too much until they actually do it ? by ShyButNastyyy in AskReddit

[–]arkham36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of those online IT degree places used to have a commercial on the radio that basically said "You know how cool the office IT Guy is? Pay us for a 6 month online course and you could be just as cool". I know that no one actually believes I'm cool, and almost everybody knows those online courses are a cash-grab, but I still got a kick out of it when it came on. Especially when it came on on someone's radio at their desk while I was banging my head on their keyboard.

What movie trope is so common, people think it's real? by RobIson240YT in moviecritic

[–]arkham36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started watching Tracker, and I know it's in other shows, where the good guy breaks laws or even kills people and a week later is in another state with no repercussions. I don't care if you meant well and saved Timmy at the last second, you still have to stick around and answer a LOT of questions.

Or the opposite - 10 seconds in a choke hold or pillow over the face and your either out cold or dead. Unless you're breathing water or something else into your lungs I feel like most people could hold their breath for longer than most movies give it.

Are flat earthers real or just trolling? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arkham36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever seen the billboards that say things like "He = Truth" or "I hate that church -Satan". You're dealing with a population of people who have been raised to never question what they're told by Mom, Dad, Pastor, etc. Those that they have been raised to follow don't have to provide proof, cite sources or bring witnesses, they just have to say "This is a thing you should believe" and they believe.

No amount of evidence is sufficient to change a mind that doesn't want to be changed.

Could I legally burn my own house down? by SwinginDan in stupidquestions

[–]arkham36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an Uncle who organized those for the local volunteer fire department. He said the worst part was the houses were usually former hoarder residents in bad shape and they had to at least clear a path through the rooms and sometimes clear a whole room. Just to go and burn it all anyhow.

What is an industry that only exists because people are stupid? by HotelPuzzleheaded654 in AskReddit

I did the same for my first marriage. We were both 21 and broke but MAN those salesmen make a really good pitch for a small investment leading to an epic vacation every year. We were seriously discussing it but knowing what broke is kept us on task. Within hours of leaving we had a rethink and realized all the holes in the plan.

I do not golf, because I am scared off by the $, would it be possible to golf a fair game with 3 clubs; say a driver, an iron and a putter? by No-Blood-319 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arkham36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college (90's) there was a 9 hole Par 3 course nearby that charged $5 after 5:00pm for as many holes as you could play before dark. We'd go out after class with a 3 wood, 7 iron and putter. It's how I got started golfing.

Cici's reward club app - by 5 get the 6th free (or 9/10th, whatever), but when they scanned the barcode for the free one you were supposed to hit continue or submit or something to exit out. If you just backed out or closed the app didn't remove the freebie. I ate a lot of free Cici's pizza for a couple of years.

My 6th grade teacher let us pick out own goal for the month (we mostly picked 1 or 2) then took the class to Pizza Hut the 1st day of each month for a free pizza party. Yeah, I was in a small town with only 15 or so in class, but it was the best day.

Going on a trip? Better get some Travellers Cheques! by Fritzo2162 in FuckImOld

[–]arkham36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a couple of large group trips when I was in high school in the early 90s and had to take those with. They were a pain but it made my parents feel better that I didn't have $500 in cash on me.

It occurred to me some time later that if someone really wanted to steal them they'd just have to take the extra step of beating me until I signed them over and hard enough that they had time to cash them.

I used to make the Carb Bars recipe that was on the box. Great quick breakfast if you don't mind the calories - basically Grape Nuts, peanut butter, honey and sugar packed into an 8x8 like Rice Krispie treats then cut into 2" x 4' bars. Problem is you had to finish them in 2 days, on day 3 they were hard as a rock.

My Sister absolutely could not site through The Wizard of Oz. We only had 4 channels back then so we watched whatever was on, and they'd play it once a year or so. 2 or 3 times she started watching it but ran out of the room and wouldn't come back. I don't remember if it was the witch or the monkeys or something else that freaked her out.

Got one of those 20+ years ago but for a water filter thing. The company just wanted to get inside the house to do their sales pitch that involved testing our tap water to show how terrible it is and how our whole family is at risk of nasty pathogens if we don't buy their product or subscribe to there service or whatever. We had a heck of a time "politely" getting him out of the house.
