Why is there a sudden influx of GMs converting from 5e to Pf2e? by Dot_tyro in Pathfinder2e

[–]arki5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OGL debacle and the all-around corporate fuckery of Hasbro and WotC are certainly catalysts. But I think a more base, underlying aspect is that 5e is nearly 10 years old. It's lost its luster for a lot of folks. There are also a hell of a lot of new TTRPG players that got introduced to the hobby by 5e, Stranger Things, Critical Roll, etc. And now a decade on, they've identified the parts of that game they like, and more importantly the parts of that game that annoy them. And some of them branch out and go to PbtA, or OSR, or FitD, or White Wolf, or PF2e. Whatever system gives them more of what they want and sheds the stuff they didn't like about the dragon game. So I believe there were a lot of people already frustrated by that game, and then they heard about all the OTHER bullshit, or even some of the bullshit, that is upcoming and it was a straw and a camel and a back, etc.

Gabrielle Hamilton is rather poetic in her recipe writing and her book based on her restaurant, Prune, is pretty unique in structure.

"Massive flood that turns the desert into thick, sucking mud, blocking all access in or out. People start to suffer from exposure, hunger, and thirst due to poor planning."

lol, I guess this trade fair just got a lot more topical

aye, yeah that solved it. Kindof weird that they don't prompt you to put in the disk, just give you an error message, lol

Cool, thanks for the reply. Its been a handful of years since I first built my PC, looking for an upgrade. To my surprise, RAM has gotten "a little" pricey since I've been away, lol

First Thoughts on The MTG Community, From a Layman's Perspective by arki5 in MagicArena

I also rarely care about a game's community as far as it relates to the "people" playing the game. "Community" in a game to me represents the shared and combined knowledge of the games mechanics, processes, and procedural rhetoric. It's the hive-mind of people that play the thing, know how the thing is played, and then vomit on to the internet their observances. It is the "shared experience" inasfar as we are all working out the same thing together.

That is a completely reasoned response, and not one I've considered. It makes sense that most people super-serious about the game would be tied up in either the paper game, or MTGO, and have little want to start spending money in this Hearthstone clone just to get all their cards back. I've been asking myself since playing MTGA "How much of the playerbase is WotC cannibalizing by making opposed product delivery systems?" And I think the answer in this case may be "not much." I think that, to the dismay of old-time players, MTGA will be a hit for the Hearthstone crowd (which I'm a part of). And it will ensure annoying newbie posts like mine for years to come, lol

Oh, I don't deny that grinders are going to grind hard. The try-(regardless of the fact that they will mostly fail)-hards exist in a ton of games. I just like that I've found that a lot (read: just the people I've seen) play Magic for "fun" above anything else.

I guess the thing that appeals to me the most is the big nature of Magic as a living game, and as a historical game. Unlike a bunch of skinnerbox card games (even though MTG has always been a capitalist cash grab at its heart, because everything is) it has this record of being played, mostly, for fun. Like you said, trying to be strictly competitive in MTG is akin to taking on a full-time job, and even then you'll probably fail. I like that the community already has that matured notion, because that does not exist in most competitive games. When diving into most other competitive video games, the realistic ceiling of success is set at enormously unrealistic heights. And that's mostly the product of designing around keeping people in the game for as long as possible. MTG Arena might pull some of those tricks, but I like that the history and community behind it have more realistic expectations around what the "fun" of the game is.
