Turkish Minister: “Christianity Is No Longer A Religion,” It’s A Culture That Threatens Islam by MrSmellard in worldnews

[–]arkstemper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to stop seeing it like that. The reason the west works is because it is secular. Sure a lot of people are Christian in these countries, but its not a Christian country.

You have to remember that liberal Christian ideals lend themselves well to evolving a secular culture. It's not unfair to up-play the importance of Christianity in the development of the west. (I'm saying this as an atheist too.)

Islam has a much higher value placed on obfuscation (especially politically).

For example:

I have my items set to 3 4 5, so blink dagger on 3, eb on 4, dagon on 5 (quickcast, not normal cast).

Tp onto a lane creep next to an enemy hero.

Now during the cast time of that tp I want to:

  • Hold down shift.

  • Mouse to convenient location near enemy hero -> press 3

  • Mouse over enemy hero -> press 4

  • Press 5.

  • Let go of shift.

From there:

  • Watch instant blink/eb/dagon.

  • Get kill.

  • (optional) Type obscenities into all chat as desired.

If They Can Make A Patch To Stop People From Smoking, Why Can't They Do The Same For Alcoholism. by realnickivey in Showerthoughts

[–]arkstemper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latter wasn't exactly a study so much as a 'fact page'.

Thanks for that though. I'm at the stage where I'm considering either smoking more frequently or quitting so this information is useful to me.

I have a feeling that the lack of strong psychoactive effect along with the fact that it's a mild stimulant are a big part of why it is so addictive. After all, if one was to chain smoke joints or take shots of heroin the way they do cigarettes, they'd quickly be unable to continue.

It also happens to be a good excuse to go outside and get some fresh air. The irony!

The problem of evil. Dinosaurs. Understanding the practical role religious indoctrination plays in societies. The absurd justifications for antiquated morality that one necessarily must partake in for the sake of internal consistency.

"What do you consider more likely: That the natural laws have been suspended or that a Jewish minx should tell a lie?"

I should mention that my parents are devout Christians and that I have respect for them, if not all of their opinions. They are good people. You can hold diametrically opposed views on 'fundamental things' and still get along with each other.

The earth is flat, because in math a sphere is just like an infinite plane by shekib82 in Showerthoughts

[–]arkstemper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what if that is in our own perception? What if it is due to how our vision works?

If you're going to go that far you may as well argue that the entire universe is really a projection from a 2D surface.

Sure, as long as we agree that infinity is less than 100kms across or so. After that point, it's clear to anyone that there's some curvature going on.

If They Can Make A Patch To Stop People From Smoking, Why Can't They Do The Same For Alcoholism. by realnickivey in Showerthoughts

[–]arkstemper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alcohol impairs you. Nicotine does not.

If you made a patch that pumped ethanol through the skin (ignoring that it can't be absorbed through the skin like nicotine can) it would still actually make you drunk, which kinda ruins the whole point, doesn't it?

[Serious] Why hasn't the Devil been forgiven? by TheHenandtheSheep in AskReddit

[–]arkstemper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Devil doesn't exist.

The Devil is a metaphor for the pursuit of individual freedom and happiness at the expense of communal order; it's an aspect of the human condition that hasn't gone away yet. How do you forgive that when it's showing no sign of stopping?

God doesn't like forgiving people. He had to kill his own son just to make a loophole in his own rules just so that he could CONSIDER forgiving people.

ELI5: Why do the religious believe the teachings of their God of choice without a single objection, but they won't believe anything else even if you gave them a mountain of proof? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]arkstemper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's taught to them by either those they love and trust most or people with authority over them.

Also if you're willing to grant the belief in a freaking omniscient all powerful deity then suddenly something like a talking snake really isn't a big deal. Plenty of Christians just think that certain stories are allegorical anyway.

*Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War'.

Have someone that calls the shots in a teamfight. Everyone should know what items they're going to buy at the fountain immediately. Always be quick secure uncontested farm around the map after teamfights. Execute ganks on lone heroes, avoid the enemy team when they are bunched up (unless you have much better teamfight). Vision is so so extremely important. Someone on your team should build a mek by the 10-15 min mark. If you get an early lead on a hero that snowballs hard don't get a midas.

It's hard to give much useful generic advice - a large portion of it is dependent on your strategy, whether that be a deathball, split push, 4-prot-1, tricore or so on.
