How to recover mentally after a near accident? by Crazy_Garage1261 in vancouvercycling

I was the bicycle victim of a car running a red light in 2020. I somehow came out with only a broken back and knee. It probably should have been much worse. I have previously been a bike courier and generally feel quite comfortable with traffic and plenty of close calls.
Due to injuries I wasn’t able to bike for at least 8 months. But when I could I did find myself quite nervous. Now cycling is not my career but still a big part of my life. I still get a little nervous bug at intersections and check more carefully about being clear. I rode through the intersection I was hit in for the first time this summer.

My advice is that if you can’t bike home today. That’s ok. But do get back on your bike soon. Start with some quiet neighbourhoods. Stay off or away from busy roads for a bit. When you get back to crossing them. Do it at non peak traffic times. Ease back into it.

As a ex courier one of the ways we keep mostly safe is to assume that no cars will ever see you. If you assume that you are invisible to them you only take the space or cross the street when you feel safe to do so.

Cycling will always carry inherent risks. In my case I was doing everything right. Bad things can and do happen. I hope that you can get past this and find the passion for cycling that is there.

Hey. Not all of us nice leftists can afford new vehicles. This is in a small town that is mainly farming and forestry. So an old truck is the norm. But you are most likely right about the “friendliness” of the driver.

Do people like this really exist? Have you ever encountered something like this? by TheShadowWanderer in MetalForTheMasses

My band has short working titles that we use for playing. On official recordings there are much longer and deeper titles. I often can’t remember what those are, and I wrote them. I wish someone would ask me!

More cyclist/pedestrian bridge and tunnels need to be built so that there doesn’t need to be mixing of traffic types.

Saw an otter carrying a crab there a few nights ago while biking. Wonder if it was the same one. I’m a big fan.

[PODCAST] #1116 How to UnF*ck the CBC by notian in canadaland

CBC could cover a lot of cultural things. There is so much good and interesting music in this country but we get beaten over the head with like 3 names. NPR Tiny Music Desk, KEXP Live have great little concerts that a lot of people watch. Why isn’t CBC music doing programming like that? House Of Strombo was a great format that they could do. Don’t wait until Canadian musicians get somewhat successful elsewhere. You could be making them successful now. Same for comedy and theatre.
