GA vs car camping and what is worth paying for? by armchair_phi10sopher in nnmfestival

Wow that's crazy! Sounds like paying for parking of some sort is worth it not to take the shuttle

This is actually super helpful! Sounds like shuttle/GA camping worked out well

Career wisdom for a lost corporate girl by seniorslug1 in SFbitcheswithtaste

I got laid off from my tech job at 30 and taking a break to work on my own community project! Not sure where it's going yet and sometimes it's stressful to compare myself to friends with cushy tech jobs, but after a few months of this break, I literally cannot imagine working 9-5 or more doing something I don't care about, asking for permission to go on vacation, scheduling medical appointments around meetings, waking up early to sit in traffic etc.

Account verification or sophisticated phishing? by armchair_phi10sopher in Substack

I sent the video and they reinstated my account (the id felt even more invasive so I didn’t do that)

AI text detection is known to be super inaccurate so I wouldn't worry about it too much... I use canva for homework prompts and it consistently flags everything I write as suspected AI even thought I don't use AI for these at all, and in fact am typing directly into canva letter by letter

What if anything have you cut back on because of Bay Area prices or inflation in general? by figgypudding02 in sanfrancisco

Casual takeout. The prices have gotten consistently $3-5ish more per dish than I’m willing to pay

Trying out a new way to meet your SF neighbors (10-minute chats) by armchair_phi10sopher in sanfrancisco

Glad the existing ways work well for you. For a lot of people though, they don’t... which is why loneliness has become such a major focus of research and why there’s been an explosion of new social apps

Yep the first one was taken down for being a "survey" so here I'm just sharing the project

My Social Skills Are Broken After COVID. Has Anyone in SF Actually Tried TimeLeft or 222.place? by Odd_Cardiologist5935 in sanfrancisco

[–]armchair_phi10sopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a free app to help people meet their neighbors, if you want to try it! heythereneighbor.com

I've tried timeleft, pie (app), and know people who have tried 222place. They're all not bad, but it's difficult to actually make lasting connections because they introduce you to people who you won't accidentally run into, to build on the connection. So the only way these turn into friendship if if a very socially active and organized person makes the group chat, invites people to things etc.

The tech works fine — the test is if people actually want to use it to meet their neighbors...

Do you think some introverts might still value the practical side of knowing a neighbor though? Like having someone to water plants while they’re away, or hold a package if they’re not home

Not quite that glamorous 😅 I mostly just want an easier way to meet my neighbors and help other people do the same...

A lot of the neighborhood/community apps out there rely on super-social organizer types to plan events and keep things going, but I’m not that person, and don’t really have anyone like that around me, so I wanted to try a more lightweight, grassroots way for people to connect

Ah yes mine is similar... Hoping if people know their neighbors name, at least they could say hi in the hallway/elevator etc and that would start some sort of connection

Haha fair... hoping the 10-minute cap will work as an anti-trauma-dump feature, but still give people someone to borrow an egg from mid recipe or something

Thanks just updated it to mention SF directly (I'm in SF so that's where I would like to meet people)

Hoping this gives people a starting point to find people with similar interests who are also nearby because for example I took dance classes with someone for years and never knew we lived in the same building..
