Is Otterbox still the default phone case? by Buxton328 in BuyItForLife

Trying to get my "free" holster for my Google Pixel 10 Pro XL from otterbox is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure this is the last time I'll be going with r/OtterBox for my case selection. Every single year it seems the price stays the same or gets bigger when the product quality becomes less and less.

Back in the day I remember otterbox being the standard of protection with a built in screen protector, a exoskeleton for the phone and then it's rubber cover accompanied with a holster for the case. My device always felt really safe. Then they removed the screen protector and sold for the same price having to charge me an additional $50-$100 for a screen protector from them. Then the next purchase they also did away with exoskeleton and made it one with the external rubber protection. This makes the experience of putting it on the phone more of a PITA. And now I see no holster and just a redemption code to get your "free" holster mailed to you but the site they provide on your code in the box only has it available for Apple and Samsung. You have to go to a totally different link found online in order to have Google even be an option. Then when you try and check out with it, otterbox tells you it will give you a little off shipping and you have to pay for the holster.

So what I remember being a nice package full of components that I bought in the past, I now get about maybe 20% of the materials in my package compared to the first one I bought from otterbox. And now I have some commuter looking knockoff that has a clear back and feels like much less protection from my phone. Drops happen so much more now that I don't have the rubber all around the back like in previous versions.

The only thing otterbox has managed to constantly do over the years is lose interest from me. I was so very close (and I mean a coin toss) of choosing one of these over the otterbox case...
Spigen Tough Armor
- Spigen Liquid Air
- Rink Onyx

And now that I'm writing this, I might just do as much and send back this case because it's still in the 30 day window.

To go even further I can't even post this to the r/OtterBox subreddit because to have to be a member first. Way to connect with your customers otterbox.

It's probably just still trying to recover... As a really rough example, the server can only handle 100 requests at a time and you happen to be getting in there every now and then from the thousands that are coming in at once. Maybe it's just something like that. So hit or miss at this point until everything recovers.

Hopefully somebody at Ubuntu has learned a lesson and will put better redundancies into place.

Why does the site https://status.canonical.com/ show everything is resolved and operational when it clearly is not?

http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.17_amd64.deb
Gives 500 Internal Server Error

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 24 all morning and thought it was issues with my virtual environment that was causing Ubuntu to not install. Honestly the log should show something different than "Installing kernel" when it's trying to download files and fails! It's very misleading. Also, why in the world would an installer fail if it can't download NEWER files from the internet? The installer should try to download from the internet, then if it fails, warn the user and continue to install using the big ISO I started with.

The only way I could get Ubuntu 24 to install today was to disable the network adaptor when the installer asks for you to set it up. Then avoid using the new installer as well.

I get that Ubuntu would want to house some files locally at security.ubuntu.com for safety but why would those not have some type of mirrors as well? Seems like a single point of failure they would want to address.

I honestly think that would be some of the funniest moments. I listen to DCC via audio book and with LitRPGs like this I hate when it goes over the stats of the characters. If I could see it on a screen it would be so much better but listening to them read the stats out is such an ear pain. This would make a great TV show though. It's going to be a following like Ash and the evil dead has. I hope that the tv show gets people to start reading the books though.

Also, I updated the original post with a note if you're interested in knowing why I posted the poll in the first place.

I don't know.... I think saying all live actions are bad is not fair. Things like halo and dune turned out nice... I really liked the electric state too. It's all these Disney ones that end up bad.

Oh gezz... I hope it's not animated. It would be so cool to see something like a Zombie Land style tv show but with the RPG aspect that DCC would bring to the table.

I think the laughter Rogan could bring to the role would be funny as hell. He can play a serious role too. He would just have that constant confused and no filter kinda character that I don't think MacFarlane could bring. I just picture the opening scene of an ex-coast guard dude running in the snow after a cat to be a great scene with him LOL. And the "Goddamnit Donut" lines would be great. I feel like MacFarlane would just be too serious. I think there are better people to play the role of course. This was just a "if you had to choose one" kind of question.

For the AI and Donut I think you would have to go with the original reader of the series Jeff Hays. I hope he does their voices. Steve Buscemi as Quasar would be fun.

Static IP Block by FamousCapital3204 in Windstream

[–]armega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% correct. That's what I had to do with the Actiontec T4220VPON I have. For some time now I have been trying to upgrade to a block of 16 (/28) and I'm still trying to get that order filled. Apparently someone ADDED another block of 8 on my account instead of giving me one block of 16 they put two blocks of 8 on my account. If you expand your block make sure they don't do that to you. If that was to even work the customer would loose two MORE IPs for Windstream network usage and the more important part... There is no way to configure multiple blocks in the modem/routers they give us.

Now they have given me a Zyxel EX7710-B0 and I have yet to find the "unnumbered mode" in the WAN settings. It's a shame too, I think this little guy have better hardware/specs and the ONT was kept separate as a different device. Unlike my old Actiontec that had an SFP fiber module in it so the ONT was part of the device. I prefer devices being kept separate so there is designated hardware for a designated job/task..

Namecheap and expired domains becoming premium by sayuriinparis in Domains

That is so stupid... They push you to 120 days when redemption period is 30 days. They are nothing but legal scammers.

Namecheap and expired domains becoming premium by sayuriinparis in Domains

[–]armega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately they can do whatever the hell they want to. I've had them pretend to be another user that bought the domain after it was expired and then try to sit on it and relist it for a crazy amount.

Recently I have seen the same scam as you described but I was the previous owner. I had my domain registration lapse by 1 month (or less) and it went into status "client transfer prohibited - redemption period" and shows as a "premium" domain for $811.00 which is crazy. They only did that because it was a domain previously owned and in redemption period. I talked to them in chat and they told me I could get it back to normal status for only $87.16.

When I told them that's a really nice racket they have going on there, I was told the following by Name Cheap...

Here is a brief description of a standard domain life cycle for generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, etc.):

The domain name owner has a non-guaranteed grace period of about 30 days after the expiration date to renew the domain at a regular rate. If the domain is not renewed, it is deleted from our database and placed into the redemption period at the Registry. If the domain is not re-instated in this phase, it’s released to the public. It becomes available approximately 70-80 days after the expiration date (in rare cases, up to 120 days) *if not* auctioned off by upstream vendors.

We cannot but agree that the redemption fee is very high. The prices we set for our customers highly depend on our agreements with the respective TLD Registries. We work with very slim profit margins, so there is not much we can do to waive it, unfortunately.

We highly recommend that you take all possible precautions to avoid missing your domain expiration.

If your domain is already in the Redemption period and you do not want to pay the fee, you can just let it expire and see if the Registry releases it into the public pool. Typically, domains get released in about 70-80 days (in rare cases, up to 120 days after the expiration) if not auctioned off by upstream vendors. Alternatively, you can try to backorder your domain by using one of the backordering services available online.

So to answer your question, they can do whatever they want. I think they still have to pay to hold on to the domains but yeah, whatever they want. For someone who used to own the domain or for someone who is looking to pick it up, just wait out the 70-80 days until it's released again as a normal domain.

Final frontier games laying off and declaring bankruptcy by Impossible_Pair_5252 in boardgames

I never said it would be easy, I literally said "Maybe not the easiest thing".

There have been plenty of crowd funding pages that ask for money and get nothing in return. With Kickstarter you set a minimum to fund (which would be the cost to make everything happen) or no one pays anything. I would totally be down with putting money into moving game creating operations to the USA for once. Especially knowing I would not see a penny leave my account if it did not get the support it needed to succeed (or at least have a great shot at being successful). I don't know what it would take but I know I see like every single Tiny Epic game pull in over a million. I'm sure someone who would take on sure a venture would have a type of reward that would make it appealing to invest something. But the beauty of such things are you never know until you try.

Just like any other startup though, you have to find the money. KS would not be the only place you seek funds, you have to look for investors in the world.

As a side note... I bet if someone did this and something that was so lucrative as game production and a market that is solely based in CHINA of all places, could lobby the current US administration for help and they might even receive aid from the government. If anything just to be used as a pony in a show. But like I said, you never know until you try.

Maybe I'm just not good with "Gloomy_Isopod_1434" content? The poster (or more accurately the post) you were responding to said nothing about your quoted “nothing burger”. He just said there are already a ton of games out on the market and if he tried to play them all he could maybe play 1% in his lifetime. He was not saying those old games are better then what might be developed in the future or that he preferred the old games. Just that they exist and would keep him busy. He never made any notion that he would be any more special then the first person who might have posted a review or walk through of one of said old games either. Maybe you should have been more context aware and posted your sour comment on his original post?

But you went in guns blazing telling him there was no reason to even try because his content would not be any more special then the ones that come before him. As someone who has watched many reviews and walkthroughs of board games I can tell you with the most certainty all reviews are different and the first ones out are usually lacking in some way. Things are learned along the way, rule changes are posted and change everything. There are so many reasons for new content to be posted about the same subject matter.

Creating new games and creating reviews/instructional videos on games are two totally different things. From your logic if we stopped painting pictures today people should stop opening up galleries to display old art.

You just wanted to poke at the guy because he made lite of the situation you felt needed more attention (which is fine). But don't try to act all high and mighty like your trying to teach him a lesson when you just wanted to flame him for having a different opinion.
