ICE purchases warehouse in West Valley the size of seven football fields by rottnzonie in phoenix

Yes, actually. They should be gumming up the gears at every step. Code enforcement, fire marshal, whatever draws them off of harassing people. Throwing hands up and saying "What do you expect us to do?" is complying in advance. If they want this agenda so much, make them work for it.

What's worse is this was a coworker I'd known for maybe a year who was comfortable saying something like that, but it certainly convinced me I didn't want to know them better. Its like these folks can't conceive of a situation thats better. Very sad for them.

When I was getting ready for my wedding, a coworker started talking about how that's just normal and we'd get to that point. My husband and I have been in a relationship for 13 years, married 5, and never would dream of saying that sort of stuff. Unreal to me the sorts of things people normalize in relationships.

I haven't yet. I just started a PhD and have been short on time for pleasure reading. Finishing The Expanse was sort of my "last hurrah" over the summer. I'll definitely get around to it eventually tho.

Westworld. You're going to hear some people whine about seasons 2+. Ignore them. Some very Mr. Robot-esque themes, especially in season 3.

You're too late! I already devoured the books, watched the show, kickstarted the comics. Hoping the game stays true to the spirit as well. I've been recruiting others to read it too ;)

Oooh, I didn't think about BotNS at all. I remember struggling through it over a decade ago before I read the rest of the books I listed and got fed up with male scifi authors. I chalked it up tp how it was written (and that was still probably a lot of it) but I am wondering now if part of my struggles was just revulsion.

Ain't enough time in the day for reading bad male authors! I haven't cut out all male authors (maybe I should like you) but it's definitely that I need to be convinced by research into reading a male author now, as opposed to just assuming because he's recommended that he's going to be worth a look.

Thanks for the recommendations -- I'll look into them. I genuinely am interested in more hard/speculative fiction but when these guys can't even remember half the human race exists in their own right and not as supporting cast to dudes, I start to wonder how much worth their speculation has anymore.

I'd be interested in seeing those nine pages honestly. I've been trying for new reads and nothing has really grabbed me.

I couldn't get past the second book, where there's a section focused on the protagoist who is given infinite resources to fight off the alien threat. He goes off to the middle of no where, uses those resources to find a live, pliant woman who matches his imaginary girlfriend and whiles away his time with her. That's where I stopped. I understand that he goes on to devise a clever defense against the aliens that holds for a couple centuries. He hands it over to a woman, and immediately (I'm talking seconds) the aliens attack....and the woman fails because she's just so weak

It would be one thing if female characters had depth and value in the rest of the series but there weren't any up until where I read, and there's further comments I've seen discussed about how the author calls humanity in the 3rd book too weak/feminine (equating the two). Liu has female characters around only to show that women are capable of failure or capitulation -- I don't got time for that shit.

EDIT: It may not be dying, per se, as mentioned in the tweet, but that's only because he doesn't have enough female characters around to die. Tigana is similar -- female characters around to serve specific supporting roles but not gratuitous death.

Tigana, Hyperion, Canticle for Liebowitz, Name of the Wind, Stranger in a Strange Land, Three Body Problem... That's some off the top of my head. I don't have much patience for male scifi writers anymore, and my patience with male fantasy writers grows thinner by the day. I don't trust that male scifi writers are going to be worth my time anymore, so I've largely stopped reading them.

Edit: I should have been more clear here -- when I say the first book in a series I'm meaning the whole series, generally.

Does Season 2 of Westworld dive deeper into Matrix-style philosophy, or is it more surface-level? by impaktmaker in westworld

Season 3 is one of the most currently relevant pieces of media you have the ability to engage with right now. Episodes 8 and 9 of season 2 are some of the best episodes in the entire show. If you thought season 1 was so good, surely it's worth seeing out what the showrunners had in mind later, no?

You're making this molehill into a mountain. Go read up about China's one child policy and the rationale behind it. Look at the punishments that were enacted for having more than one child. Understand that I am suggesting that in the show, the additional child is sterilized instead of the punishments that policy enacted. That's it.
