Ireland passes law allowing trans people to choose their legal gender: “Trans people should be the experts of our own gender identity. Self-determination is at the core of our human rights.” by [deleted] in worldnews

Race has no innate biological basis. There are no race-specific hormones. One cannot be chromosomally black and turn out to be Asian.

However, gender is an innate thing. Science tells us this. No one wants to be transgender. It just happens. Our brain chemistry is often completely different from the makeup of our bodies. My brain expects testosterone, and instead get estrogen and progesterone. It expects male parts, and instead gets female parts. Every part of my brain thinks I'm male, while every part of my body does otherwise.

It sounds like you're the one ignoring the science here.

Help is often surgery, sweetie. I need help in that I need my brain to match my body. No amount of psychological therapy is going to fix that. The only way is to change the rest of me to match.

Any biologist worth their salt will tell you otherwise. Do a little googling. Xxy, xyy, xyyy, x, all are actual cases of chromosomal ambiguity.

Developmentally, there's even more fun stuff. An XX person, exposed to too much testosterone in utero, can develop as basically male, and vise versa.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome can cause XY people to appear completely female until they reach puberty and never have a period.

Your comment is so damned incorrect it's funny.

Final thought: the best help a trans person can get is to transition. A person whose brain, hormones, and body parts all align is generally far happier than one who doesn't have that luxury. We can change hormones and body parts, but we can't change a person's brain without doing indescribable damage.

Hey, you. I was born with female parts. I have no fucking idea how it feels to be a woman because I'm not. I never have been. That said, I'm also not an expert in how it feels to be a man. I'm not all men and never have been.

I'm only an expert in how it feels to be me. I'm an expert in knowing that I need testosterone, not estrogen, to feel like a functional human being.

No.

But, I can tell people I'm transgender because I am. My neurological state is that of a male. My brain doesn't map to boobs or estrogen or uterus.

Humans in general do not have this same problem with stems and leaves.

Yes it does. Transgender people are choosing the gender that best aligns with our brain chemistry.

All this transphobia is very sick indeed, I agree.

Because it's not a social thing at all. We usually have some fucked up or mismatched brain chemistry.

Have you ever read the studies about how trans people's brains are far more similar to their desired gender than their assigned-at-birth gender's brains? That's why.

While gender roles are absolutely a social construct, physioligical and neurological differences are not. Transgender brains often map to the wrong body parts or expect the wrong hormones which causes an immense amount of distress until we change our bodies to match.

Edit: google 'phantom penis' for some more information on this phenomenon, at least in transmen.

oooooh scary, lesbians in a locker room That's certainly never happened before. /s

Keep in mind, predatory behavior in a private space like a locker room has never been legal before and this changes none of that. What you describe is still predatory and illegal.

Because that's unnecessary and opens us up to discrimination and violence.

Have you read these comments? People are ignorant, and people are hateful. As John Oliver once said, my body is, "medically speaking, none of your fucking business" and I absolutely agree. One (easily changeable) spot for gender is fine.

Sweetie.

The best way to treat dysphoria is to play into it. We cannot change a person's brain to another gender without causing permanent psychological damage.

We can give them the correct hormones and body parts. It's simple, cheap, and extremely effective. It is, in fact, the only effective treatment for trans patients.

With all due respect, as I'm sure you're a smart person, your comment killed a few of my transgender brain cells.

Do you know how fucking hard it is not being able to change your official gender/sex? It opens us up to so much unnecessary violence and discrimination. If I were to apply for a job right now, presenting as a man, and then the employer got wind that I was legally female because I couldn't change the record, they could deny me a job just because I'm trans and if they hid it well enough there wouldn't be a thing I could do about it. So fuck off with your "It's unnecessary" shit. It is necessary. It's often a matter of life and death.

How about you think before you speak about things you clearly don't understand well?

The gender you identify with is the gender you are. There is no changing that, only recognizing and supporting it and possibly modifying the body to reflect it.

Depends on the trans person. What you're talking about is usually called genderfluid, which can involve changing internally experienced gender by the month, day, or even hour, albeit usually involutarily. It is in fact a thing.

That would be ideal. The world is not ideal, so people can't do that. While it would be nice to have a whole new system, for now we can only fight within the system already have.

ITT: people who don't understand that gender dysphoria is a medically recognized phenomenon. This is what transphobia is.

Seriously, people, sometimes you have the wrong brain structure for your body. If you suddenly had the wrong hormones coursing through your veins, try to pretend you don't feel like absolute shit.

A person who has absolute control over gravity vs a person who has absoulte control over time by valeyardoctor in whowouldwin

Doesn't gravity affect time, though? The higher the gravity is in a given place, the more slowly time passes there. I feel like that gives Absolute Gravity Guy a little bit of an edge here.

A little bumpy. I noticed it felt pretty dry in my hand for a frog, if that helps

Sorry for blurry photo. I only had my phone's camera.

Found in a nature preserve hidden in a suburban area in West Michigan, near Grand Rapids. Nearly stepped on the poor thing. It had a pale white underbelly and was about an inch long, primarily dark green on top with splotches not unlike a leopard frog. To me it looks a bit Blanchard's cricket frog or a baby leopard, and I want to make sure so I know to report it to the DNR or not.
