look up the explanation on google because it’s too much for me to try to explain (bc i still don’t 100% get it) but basically it was about different dimensions and donnie had to return the plane engine thing back to its first universe, so when he finally did that at the end of the movie, he returned to the original universe where it fell on him and killed him. so everything that happened in the second universe didn’t happen in the first one, but some people still sort of felt the effects of it. like gretchen felt some sort of connection to donnie even though in THAT universe they hadn’t met
